Id go with a Remington, Browning, or a Sako Ive never owned a weatherby but know lots of people that have. And the thing I see is that out of everyone I know that bought a weatherby, none of them own one now!

You'll find that the 300 Weatherby factory ammo is a lot more expensive than the 300 Winchester ammo. The Weatherby will give you a little more velocity though, although it won't matter much in the field.

Odd. Most I know that own them usually increase their collection-myself included.
With the .300 being the most popular of the weatherby calibers, ammo is very easy to find, although your local UFA might not carry it. If you look at the cost of say federal premium .300 win to .300 wby, the difference is not really that much. I own 2 of them, one with a wood stock, the other fiberglass, and they are both shooters. I haven't had anything to do with a vanguard, which is actually a howa action, but I sure do like the mark V actions, big difference with the short bolt throw.
Yeah, ammo is a bit more, but so is the velocity/energy, so you just have to decide if you want to pay the extra.

I shot a .300 wby mag in a rem. 700 for 3 years and sold the gun as I wasnt a big fan of it. Im not gunna comment on the calibers as I would never go to a .30 cal again. But the people I know didnt like the weatherby synthetic stocks and just overall they werent happy with the guns. I also hardly ever see a client with a weatherby. 95% of the guys I guide either have a custom rifle on a rem. action or a factory Rem. or Sako. Was just making an observation as I have never owned one.

300WM or 300WSM are my choices over the Weatherby...unless you reload. As mentioned, Weatherby ammo is expensive. 180gr Accubonds or TTSX's are the bullets for the 300WM or 300WSM

HAd my Sako m75ss 300WM new since 1998....love this rifle / caliber.

For the money, a Tikka T3 LS model in either caliber gets my vote. First would be a Sako m75 or m85. Maybe the Sako A7 is another rifle to look at. I'm not a fan of Weatherby rifles.

Seen a Sako m75 Finnlight 300WSM for sale on Ellwood Epps website, or check the EE forum on AO or CGN for a used rifle

Like i said earlier, I am a fan of the weatherby, but have never had anything to do with the vanguard. Anything I have heard about them has all been positive. Quite a few guys on here shoot them and can't seem to say enough good things about them. As for the .300 wby or .300 win, both are fine calibers. One has a bit more velocity but is also more expensive to shoot. Can't go wrong with either caliber for an all round .30. Hope that helps rather than other folks telling you that you need to buy what they shoot because it has to be the best. Surprised nobody has suggested getting a remington in 30'06 because it will kill anything in north america and top it off with a leupold scope seeing as how the warranty service is right here in alberta.

howa actions are a fantastic action.cylindrical tube, integral recoil lug, and a sako style extractor. pretty much a remington and a winchester rolled into one.easy to accurize also.built several rifles on them and they are all tackdrivers.

hey brain child would you spend big dollars on a rifle for your wife the first year she was going to hunt just to have her decide she wasnt into hunting. The 710 was used one year and she is now packing a Remington model 7 w/synthetic stock and a 4200 scope in 7mm-08(and I dare you to come out shoot her) and the 710 rides around on my tractor. For your info I shoot a Browning x-Bolt in .270wsm.

Oh and she probably did better with her 710 than most guys did last year.

I would definitely go with the 300win mag,as the difference in velocity is small with the 24" barrel on the Vanguard. As far as Weatherby rifles go,I have owned a couple of Mark V rifles, and I will never own another. However,I do find the vanguard to be great value for the price.

.300 win mag is cheaper to buy ammo for but if $$$ isn't an issue the weatherby caliber have a little more stink mostly due to weatherby caliber have freebore. Some guys may argue whether freebore deminishes accuracy other will say otherwise. I don't own a weatherby myself but I have shot a few and have to say that the most accurate rifel I have ever shot was a .300 weatherby but it was a custom so not a good comparison.

I must love my wife more.

I definitely think highly enough of her to not want to saddle her with a 710.

Uh, Winchester's got an M70 in 300 WSM and (I think) 300 Win Mag. The new models have gone back to the pre-64 action, though they don't have the same beautifully-aged patina as a real pre-64.

I just bought a 2008 Limited Edition, but it hasn't arrived yet...

As for the wives and guns argument, kiss and make up, guys. I envy you both the fact that your wives are willing to hunt. Mine's still at the eye-rolling stage.

Relax. I just couldn't help pointing out that the 710 is a piece of junk. Especially considering your advice on the Weatherby.
