Default new 17 HMR questions

I'm heading to Lloydminster tomorrow to pick up my new CZ lh .17 hmr. Looking for suggestions for a scope as well as where to pick up the cheapest ammo (Edmonton area).

Thx in advance.

17 hmr ammo has not been cheap lately. In Calgary, Wholesale seems to be the best spot. Canadian Tire is usually more. Luckily, your CZ may not be too picky in its fav ammo- Hornady is usually reasonable...stilll 14-15 / box. I added a 17mach 2 to my arsenal...reasonable prices for ammo and still good varmint killing power.

Check the local Walmarts and Canadian Tire Stores. P&D Enterprises and Wholesale Sports will have your ammo if Walmart and CT don't. Probably won't be cheap, if you want cheap ammo get a 22LR and get closer to your target. For a scope I would recomend at the minimum a really good 3X9. If you plan on shooting gophers you might want something stronger, gophers get pretty small at 200 yards even on 9 power. Just my opinion of course.

Thanks guys. I'm considering either a Legend 4-12 AO or the same in a 3200. Have both on other rifles, both seem like good values for the $. Thoughts?

I have a savage 17hmr. I started with a 3-9 3200, but after a while I wanted more, I actually use a 6-24 elite 4200. If you shoot alot of gophers at over 100yards you might like at least 12-15x. Sometimes you see them peeking over the mound with just a little snout sticking out, extra magnification is nice to have then. My little rifle shoots 5 shots under .5" at 100 consistently, and since you are shooting at small targets (gophers and such) the magnification doesn't seem to hurt. I have gotten red squirrels at 255yards, and ground squirrels out to 300 when the winds are calm. The ammo is a little pricey but it sure shoots well.

Try to eliminate the AO, look for something in that mag range without paralax adjustment or equiped with the side focus.

The side focus is way more user freindly IMHO.

What about a nikon prostaff? I am pretty sure they make it with side focus ( I agree, I like side focus much better as well, just more convinient) and they seem to have a decent rep for the cash.

I have two Nikon Buckmasters on my Cz's. Both are >17s. One is a 4.5x14 which is good and one is 6x18 which is better. Both very clear and excellent for the money.

My Cz's are not overly fussy on ammo, as said above. Just give the barrels a few shots to adjust.

There are few bargains on ammo. If you can find last years stock and an honest supplier you may be able to get it a little cheaper. Practice with a .22 and blast gophers with the .17. Its cost effective.

What do you have for rings and what height? I bought Leupold rimfire 3/8" groove rings in medium height. Will this make for enough bolt clearance when cycling the action?
