30-06 or 7mm-08 or ?
Hey everyone,
I’m in the market for a new rifle. I am purchasing a Tikka but unsure of what caliber or cartridge to get. I want something fairly fast and flat with decent energy down range. Not interested in a magnum. I’m on the fence between a 3006 and a 7mm-08. It’s not a recoil issue as I’ve owned and shot magnums in the past. It’s mainly for whitetail. Average shot between 200-350 yards. However, this will be my primary hunting rifle so it will be used for when I am drawn for moose and elk and don’t want to be under gunned (is 7mm-08 big enough). I’m not an expert on ballistics or anything in that regard. Looking for opinions on which way to go. Narrowed it down between 3006 and 7mm-08 unless someone can change my mind - will be factory ammo.
Thanks in advance.

Definitely 30-06 if factory ammo.

Ok, now let’s say I’m handloading as I do have access to reloading equipment. Does that change the suggestion?

Get a 270 Win, compares favorably to the 7-08 but uses the full action length of the Tikka. Shooting 130's and 140's it will be a bit faster than the 7-08.
Have a long action receiver?...may as well have a long action round.
More factory ammo options in 270 Win as well.

vote for 30-06
I vote for the 30 cal of 1906. 270 is too new-fangled and unproven.....bwaahaha.
Lower recoil is the only reason I could think of for you to choose 7mm-08.

Rembo got it right, 270 Win for the T3. 6.5x55 would also be a decent one if you reload, but I'd probably stick with the 270.

I love the 30-06, but I’d take the 7-08 (or 6.5CM) 10 out of 10 times. More enjoyable to practice with, which leads to higher proficiency. And proficiency is far more important than more ‘power’.

If you want to handload eventually, split the difference and go 280Rem.

I picked up a 7mm-08 as my first rifle, mainly shooting deer and moose. These were the reasons why I chose 7mm-08 over the other ones.
7mm-08 compared to 30.06: bigger bullet, will help take down moose
7mm-08 compared to 6.5: 6.5 would be awesome as a dedicated deer rilfe, if you also have moose rifle.
7mm-08 compared to 7mmRemMag: Less recoil for 7mm-08 and the 7mmRemMag would cause a bit too much damage to the poor little deer.
Once I got my 7mm-08, the biggest negative I noticed is you are very limited to factory ammo options. Most stores only carry 4-5 ammo options for 7mm-08.

Ugh 7mm08 is a 284 and 3006 is a 308 so you are incorrect 7mm08 is smaller and 7mm rem unless you have shot something with one shouldn’t comment about it I’ve seen dozens of animals shot from deer to moose and not any more damage from a well placed bullet then anything I’ve deen

Might as well just post that you are new to rifles, bought without doing any research, and still haven't done any. I count 3 clear "swing and a miss battah battah."

If this is the only two choices for a one gun safe the 30-06 would be a wise choice due the vast number of available factory rounds out here.
you could shoot everything from mice to moose.
