English Setters
I was just reading a thread that has about finished its run and wanted to comment about Cohod's comment about his English Setters lack of enthusiasm for the water. I have a two English Setters that are not from the Show Lines. They are both excellent Swimmers but it was alot of time and effort to get them to that stage. To begin with my male did not know how to pump his back legs and got face wet everytime he attemped to leave shore. I am sure many of us have seen this kind of action before.I live beside the North Saskatchewan river with almost a mile of shoreline. The way I got them to enjoy the water is to wade out in the river with them walking the shore. It's quite rocky and doesn't drop off to quick. They love to investigate where the rocks go after you throw them into the river. As we walk in the river I throw the rocks a little farther out every time. eventualy as you are walking the bottom will drop off in the odd spot and the dogs are forced to swim. My Male now does not want to leave the river and has on occation swam across to investigate what was on the other side. We have floated the river and it is not uncommen for him to swim the whole mile. My Female is not to that stage yet. Once she gets out there she is fine, but still a little hard to get her started. TYhis year I totaly expect her to be in the same stage as the male. This is great execise for them as well and I would think swimming even a half mile is like runnin 5. Cohod do you still run English Setters?

Hey Coyote:
Could another dog (German Wirehair) already in the water, perhaps entice your setters into the water?

Its not a matter fo the English setter make bad waterdogs because they dont. Get them into water and waterfowling early just like you do upland game and you will have a great waterfowl dog.

Good to here from you Haywire. I actually seen the GWP going down for the third time at the same time as the Setter and He hit the water running for the rescue. Then when he was pulled back to shore, that big walley you got on your wall was latched onto him.

Good one Joe Joe!
I'm picking up the new hunting machine first weekend in May.
Think I'm going to drive down and pick her up; then I can pick her myself, rather than having the breeder do it, and avoid the plane ride for her.
For those of you that aren't sure there are any water lovin' setters, Coyote's male will swim in our canal against the current forever if you let him.

English Setters
Coyote Joe,
Yes, I do still run English Setters. I have 2 one I think may retire this year she is going on 14 my newest one is just 11 months. Glad to hear not all Setters dislike the water. Where do you dogs come from? Both mine are from the states and the next one will be from B.C hopefully in the next 2 years. I was going to run the pup in some puppy stakes this spring but she is still a bit of a boot polisher so I have some work to do to get her to range. She has lots of natural ability so I’m not worried yet.
chase at 13
pepper at 6 months

Cohod those are some good lookin setters. I got both of mine out of Spokane from Gene Mahoney, of Mahoney Kennels. I am glad you pasted some pics of your dogs because I was itching to do the same. It is amazing how much these dogs looks change when they are on a bird or acting birdy. I have pics of my dogs when they are in the yard and they could be family to your dogs. When they are on point or working, they just ripple. Here is Buddy the Swimmer. He will be 7 in Dec.
<img border=0 src="http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s271/heywhitey/Buddy.jpg" />
Molly She is 3 this year. She looks amazingly like your Female.
She though was missing half of her tail at birth.
<img border=0 src="http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s271/heywhitey/dog010.jpg" />
Both Setters range more than I would like because Buddy false points alot. Last year he was out about 300 yards and locked up in the marsh/willows in the Rolling hills area. I waded out to him and got close enough to shoot the sparrows that got up in front of me. Boy was my face red. I now run Ecollars on them both and have purchased pointing beepers for this fall so I can here them in the cattales. I tried this year to breed them (too each other) with no success. She would not let him mount. The way I calculated it her heat was over too soon. Not sure why? I may try one more time next year if not late summer but that will wreck her hunting season. I will deside after her next heat begins.
We have one more hunting dog that my son bought late last fall he is a Hungarian Wirehaired Visla. He is regestered in the rare breed category. He does not range near what the Setters do but he will still be great.

Thanks for letting me ramble on.
Coyote Joe
If anyone else wants to print pics of their dogs and tell a few stories that would be great. How about it Haywire?

English Setters
Nice looking dogs Coyote Joe, you are correct about the location we spend opening week in that area and I spend most weekends down there through out the season. This year I’m going to a new location for the opening couple days then moving south to Vauxhall. My new pup comes from Indiana she has a bit of Havelock and a bit of Grouse ridge lines in her. the old boys dogs come from south of loydminster, I think on the sask side of the border. Where did your sons Hungarian Wirehaired Visla come from very nice looking dog.

English Setters
Thanks Cohod, My sons Visla came from a breeder out of Philidelphia. Good people, we had to be interviewed before they would sell their pup to us. He was non stop to Edmonton. Lucky to get a non stop flight. We hunt Rolling Hills alot because of family that live there so I will keep an eye out for you if you decide to hunt there again. Also there is a Phesant Festival dinner/Auction/Silent Auction Opening day evening in Roling Hills. Prises for the biggest bird and a few others. Auction items and dinner moneys for the community.

Hey Coyote:
Although it goes against my nature to post Wire Hair pics with Setters...and I'm not much of a story teller, here's a pic of two good boys resting after a limit of Ruffed Grouse was taken. Before you kid me about the pretty ribbons, I put these on the dogs, because Fall Bear was open.
For those that don't know, Gunner is Barbwire's dog and Max (black) is mine.

Hey Barbwire,
I can't believe how similiar our dogs are looking. You may remember I mentioned that a buddy of mine has their sister, well she doesn't have that eyebrows hanging over her nose, tebby bear look our dogs have (actually she's a lot closer to the breed standard). Haywire's dog looks very much the same, is he related? We really need to have a big GWP get together next fall. I guess a setter or two would be welcome.

Re those Griffons or German Wirehairs? I have never seen a wirehair that bushy before.

Ryan: Both pic's of GWP's are GWP's.
Up until late last Fall I also owned a Griffon. She was alot smaller than most GWP's I've seen. Her hair was curlier, but not any bushier. Here's a picture.
Remi: Is the picture you posted your friend's dog or yours? She certainly does look like my male. If this is your friends' like I think, have you got a picture of your dog? A GWP get together sounds like a good idea! (even with the English)
Barbwire: :lol :lol :lol That's funny...considering he walked in Max's footsteps all day long.

Haywire,
That Griff is such a nice looking dog!!!
The dog in the puddle is mine when she was only about a year and it doesn't really show just how fuzzy she is (I have to get some newer pics).
Her sister is in the pic below, on the right. It was taken before their 1st birthday. Since then my dog's fuzz-factor has more than doubled while her sister looks pretty much the same.
Go GWPs!

P.S. I just realized we hijacked a setter thread, my apologies. Go setters!

Guys, those are awesome pic's of all your dogs.
I'm going to Holland in two or three years to bring back a Griffon, and it's going to be hard not to look twice at some GWP's or Munsterlanders (they look and hunt the same as Setters IMO) while there. Fantastic looking dogs guys.
