Thanks gitrdun...I picked up a bulk pack of cotton gloves from Amazon a while back, a good idea for sure. My big indecision now is whether to polish the Python and all the ivory with renaissance wax or not? I've used it on my other Pythons and it's great stuff, but I'm cautious about this situation. The ivory is old, and in fact there is a tiny split in the bottom of the oiler bottle. I want to protect it, but not do anything that might affect future value. Will have to make inquiries....

Sorry that I cannot help you with that decision. I've had some nice firearms that other people wanted to fondle. Belt buckles, rings, zippers on their vests, were a no-no. None of them even came close to the collector value of your piece, however I remained anal about their handling of it. I recently overhauled the stock on an Aya shotgun that belongs to elkhunter11. Knowing how anal that guy is about his firearms, when folks asked if they could pick it up, I replied "yes, but I'll have to kill you or he will", so it would be best that you leave it alone.....LOL.

Yes, for sure not many will ever get to touch this, even with gloves on, and certainly not without. That will save me the problems inherent with harming someone...

You bet. I'm sure that you're able to differentiate between douche bags, wanna bees, or real aficionados.

Not really a dumb question as there were 2 chamberings for Pythons. Most were 357 Mag but a small number of Target Pythons were made in 38 Special. Most of those had 8" barrels as well, they aren't that common.

And now I can put pics back up!

Absolutely none of my business...but anyone you think highly enough of to even LET them hold that...should probably know better than to ask!

Personally, it would be a "sorry, nobody holds this one...not even me most of the time!" proposition. The thing is irreplaceable and deserves to be treated that way.

Beautiful gun btw, what a specimen!

Thanks GH, and yes, I agree with you on the handling. So far, only one good friend has handled it, and he is extremely trusted with any firearms and someone who really appreciates them as I do. The rest of my friends that I trust to hold it, have all declined as you say. I 'white glove' it only, and the handling is kept to a minimum. It is a treasured specimen for sure.

I am still patiently (barely patiently!) waiting to hear back from Colt Archives on actual production numbers on it. If it is actually a 1 of 12 (ten provinces, two territories), and the only Alberta gun made by Colt.....well, let's just say that I won the lottery on this one. And even if it isn't the only one, I did....but it is looking like it is one of one. Posting on the Colt Forum, there is not a single response from anyone (serious collector or otherwise) saying 'I have the xxxx province!'.....or 'there were exactly xxxx in the Canadian Province series'......and these guys over on the Colt Forum! Pythons are a religion for them. The depth of knowledge there is staggering, and the fact that not a single person can verify production, or actually has one? Leads me to think I may have a Holy Grail Colt Python. At least for me.

Well, actually, it is a Holy Grail Python for me......

Did anyone notice on the Colt archive letter, it says that each 'providence' is outlined in Gold? I even have a typo error! On postage stamps, errors make them worth more!

A little update on the Alberta Python. I've communicated with Paul at the Colt Archives a number of times, and his take on it was that each Provincial gun in series was unique...but he couldn't come up with the paperwork to substantiate the claim as it is currently not where it is supposed to be. He is still looking.

However! He recommended I buy a particular book which references the series, so I did. It further substantiates that the Alberta gun is a unique, one off gun in the series. That book is the best $120 I have spent recently!

Cool factor of 10/10. I wondered something though (and you don't have to answer this)... Are you trying to establish it's uniqueness/monetary value for insurance purposes? I'm married into an insurance family, and have been reminded a number of times that I should have detailed records of what I have, it's value, etc. And BELIEVE me...there is nothing in my collection that comes close to what I suspect the value of that gun is. I doubt all of them together would!

Wow TC. That's an amazing piece.

That's the type of thing that heirlooms are made of.

That is actually part of the issue, getting a fair appraisal without all the background and supporting docs is going to leave it's value well shy of what has been suggested as a likely value at auction. For comparison, a one off Python that started off similar to mine (blue 6") with ivory grips, and more ornate engraving and gold work, recently sold at Rock Island auctions for $56K USD. There was some history to the gun. Another similar Python that was commissioned by Elvis Presley sold for $175K UsD...so in a nutshell, the more I can establish the better. Here is the presley Python, obviously way more ornate!

As an aside, the SK Python pictured in the book shipped Nov 21, 1979, and mine shipped Oct 26, 1979, both to same distributor in Arkansas. Alberta was first!

Beautiful gun for sure. Just wondering, and maybe I missed it in the earlier pages, but was the gun in Canada when you found it, or the States? How did you manage to buy it without the other person knowing the value of it?

Got it from a friend in BC. He did some investigating to find out production, and came up blank. All the same, it wasn't cheap by any means for me...but finding out that it is unique has placed it in a different category. He is happy I got it from him.
