7 rem, i have a 2003 f-350 7.3 liter powerstroke, 207,000 kms and still going stong. only thing i have done is an aftermarket clutch, and HPOP. i am running it with an AFE stage 2 intake, strait pipe, and stacked chips.
i have a buddy with an 06 dodge cummins and his has been good but he doesnt pull anything with it, just a daily driver to and from work. nothing has gone wrong with his so far.
the heaviest i have pulled was 24000 pds truck and trailer, that was heading into elk camp last year.
average economy empty and summer fuel between 20-22 mpg, depending how hard my foot is in it. hook up a trailer and i am around 14-16 mpg. hope this helps, take care, rob

Bear bait. what model of engine, cpl# etc that you have thats pushing 600hp? Also that looks alot like Cross Lake?

edit: Doesn't matter what manufacturer you choose, adding a bunch of HP adding aftermarket accessories can shorten the life of a diesel engine. Cam shafts, cranks etc are designed to withstand only so much torque. Sure some engines are designed to work with a range of Hp. But the internal components of those engines differ depending on the HP designation that it was built for. Something to consider when buying, or adding aftermarket items.

My dad has a little older F350 (2000) which has been a great diesel, the only issues we've had was poor starting ability when it was below zero and console computer glitches. Had a small repair (can't remember what exactly) and it has been fine since (i think we got around 200 000 km on it now).

Some friends of mine on the other hand enjoyed coming on trips in ours and went and bought a 2003 or 2004 (can't remember for sure) for the extra room and towing abilities. Their truck was a complete lemon and they aren't too happy with Ford. Needed thousands of dollars worth of work in the first 100 000 or so kilometers. Well maintained as well but simply put all brands throw out the odd lemon. Sucks when its a $55 000 purchase. I have heard the most positive reports about the Ford and Dodge and a lot of negative about the chev diesels (mostly from mechanics). Has something to do with crappy head gaskets which do not last very long. I still see lots of them around with high kilometers though so it may be a isolated problem.
I sure like the towing abilities of these trucks, we towed out a 2500kg (horse trailer with argo, quad and gear) trailer and had 150 gallons of water in the back this weekend. Still accelerated great and springs still looked healthy. Good trucks and now that diesels cheaper than gas, "affordable" fuel.

The Cummins is an impressive cold weather starter. Their system of an intake heater seems to work really well, especially if you cycle it a few times before turning the engine over.

I was talking with the Chevy dealership and they told me that if you modify/install the aftermarket stuff on the diesels that it voids the warranty. The diesels can't handle the huge increase in temperature and pressure on the injectors.

Something to think about...

Yes it can void your warranty and even if you remove it before taking the truck into the dealership, the new onboard computers will give you away.

I have a 2005 Chev 2500 HD 6.0L crew cab and just put a K&N cold air intake on it, have a flowmaster muffer coming to install...talked to the dealer about that and it does not void the warranty on gas engines.

trick is to have it dealer installed...not the chip but the rest.and yes a chip will void the warrenty on any truck...if they know it was there..

ahh the cummins runs with all the other diesels and does in on 2 less cylinders. almost anything aftermarket voids the manufacturer warranty, key is to get written confirmation from you dealer that it doesnt void the warranty and your all good
