Default Lyman Die Quality ?

I'm just wondering if many people on here have used Lyman dies and how well they like them. All my dies are RCBS except for my 300wsm, they're Lyman. The brass will only go about 1/2 way in. I've tried different brands of brass fired from two different rifles and nothing will feed. I pulled the decapping pin and neck plunger and still a no go.
Anybody else run into this issue?

New? Used? stamped for right cartridge? Wrong die in right box?

I've got one set, and have zero issues.

How are you setting your dies up, is the de capping pin and expander ball maybe hitting the web in the case?

Are you using a good lube like Imperial die wax?

Default Lyman

Most of my dies are either RCBS or Lee but I do have a set of Lyman FL All - American PA 20 DELUXE in 7 MM Rem Mag / 7MM Wea./ 7 X 61 S&H that I got to load my brothers 7 MM Rem mag ammo. His rifle is a Rem 700 BDL that has a tight chamber that would only take factory ammo. the Lyman dies size the reloads tight enough that he can use my reloads.

Nice set of high polished dies that I have never had an issue with. They are knurled at all adjusting points, makes fine adjustments very nice. They are very well made and produce quality ammo.

I have a set of 270 win dies first time I used them they were so tight I had a hard time pushing a lubed fired case in, two cases later I bent the decapping pin rod $18 later I tried again same thing. I tried a new unfired case, same thing I came to the conclusion they were defective I never pursued the cause borrowed a set of rcbs from a buddy maybe some day I'll send them off to Lyman.
All my other dies are Hornady,Redding, RCBS or lee I've had any problems with those.

Dumb question but is the little vent hole plugged?

Several companies don't use vent holes so I doubt a plugged vent would stop anything.

I tried with the decapping pin and expander ball out, still won't go in. I'm using hornady one shot lube, it seems to work fine with my other dies.

Sounds similar to my issues. I also tried a new unfired and still a no go. I went to bashaw sports today and picked up a set of rcbs dies and they work fine.
Thanks for the replies but I think I got a defective set. I've emailed Lyman about the issue, if they get back to and would like to see them I'll send them in.

Thanks, Mike

The only Lyman dies I have are set of 38/357 and 303 British. Both work really well for me. Plus the finish on them is really good as well. They are probably 10 or so years old.

New, stamped 300wsm on the die

Got a .270 SM. I've found those straight parallel sided cases take a lot more force to push into the dies than other calibers. More Oomph ? Had Lyman dies in the past, equal to RCBS.

I measured the base diameter of the hole in my die at .462 270 Win.drawing has a base of .470

For compression my RCBS 280 Rem. die is .468 drawing has a base of .470

I've had Lyman dies before in different calibers and never had a problem these must have been made on Friday afternoon.

Until this thread I forgot about the Lyman die, I contacted Lyman with the above information my response;

Good morning,

I’ve gone ahead an ordered a replacement for you. It should be shipping out soon.

Best Regards,

Customer Service

Doesn't get much better than that!

I have no doubt that Lyman builds a fine product but this particular die is not right. As far as it taking a little more pressure for the straight walled short mag case I split the top of my 2x6 loading bench trying to feed it then trying to get it out.
On another note, I've still not recieved a reply from Lyman to my email about the issue.

Instead of emailing customer service I choose "request RMA" from the dropdown, explained the problem they sent me a tracking number for a new size die.
