Default Broad Head

Looking to switch from Fixed blade to mechanical broad heads. Any suggestions on some good mechanical broad heads?

I haven't taken an animal with them yet, but I'm sure Lefty will soon chime in and praise Grim reapers. They fly the same as my field points and have great reviews.

Plenty of people here can vouch for grim reapers.
I wouldn't try any other mechanical now that I've got grim reapers. Dependable design. I did pick up some wasp boss fixed blades to compare for broadhead tuning and for the sake of having both in the quiver. If I choot a coyote or a finishing shot on downed game I'd rather punch a fixed blade with replaceable blades through it.
Lefty Canuck often posts some great pics to threads like this

No issue whatsoever, from 15-40 yard pass throughs.

Biggest considerations: shot placement, angle of entry and exit, not taking risky shots.

Grim Reaper Razor Tips for my set up all the way! Great mechanical. Flys just like my field points. The new hybrid ones look interesting too.

Watch the videos, understand how they work. When you put one on an arrow inspect it and make sure it opens ok and closes with a little click/snap in the last little bit.

Shoot straight.

I have gone to the Hybrid reaper this year. Why? they were on sale ha ha. I have always had very good results with reapers.

For the record I really like the hybrids so far. Fly great as usual and are quiet. Very sharp as well.

It should be noted that a lot of mechanical broadheads may fail because the bow isn't tuned properly. If the arrow isn't flying straight it can affect how the mechanicals open, especially on lower poundage bows.

With all that said, I have heard nothing but good things about OCD broadheads from real life Alberta users. So if you can get past their goofy design OCD may be something to look at.

They work. Although they take a bit more energy to open then the original, so make sure you have 65KE minimum. For that reason I am partial to the tried and true GR Razor Tip.

First figure out the approx. speed of your bow and then you can calculate the KE. See the attached link for speed and KE calculations

Slick trick fly more accurate in my bow than the Grims for some reason. I was wanting to use Grims but I have decided to use Slick trick standards for my sheep hunt

Good choice. And for the record my quiver is full of Grim Reapers. I use to shoot Slick Tricks and I have nothing bad to say about them.

More, this is a little misleading. I believe that no style of BH (mechanical or fixed) will respond to an improperly tuned, low poundage bow very well. But a mechanical will have less of an effect on the FLIGHT of an arrow out of that poorly tuned bow, compared to a fixed blade BH.

I do agree with some parts of your statement above though. An arrow flying sideways CAN affect how a mechanical opens.

For the records, I carry 2 excellent brands / styles of mechanicals. 125 grain Rocket Steelheads and 125 grain Grim Reaper Whitetail Specials, razor cuts.

I have been using the GrimReaper Razortips as well. This season I am going to be using the Bloodsport Gravediggers in the chisel tip. My son will be using the cut tip version. But I have Reapers in my backpack.

Grim reapers. The 2 inch white tail ones work great on deer. I use the smaller diameter ones for things with thicker hide and more hair to get through.

Even though I run Grim Reapers, my final "tuning test" is screwing on a 4 blade Slick Trick and then a 3 blade Muzzy. At 40 yards they are both hitting exactly with my field points. I have no doubt in my mind that my arrow is coming off the bow perfectly as long as I don't induce any torque.

Well I just learned that I'm shooting shooting around 110 kinetic energy so I think I can open any broadead and hopefully pass through my elk and moose this year. 😊

What are your numbers? You must have a 32" draw and a 500+ grain arrow. You need to actually chrony your setup....don't use the published IBO number.

Hardly anyone achieves 110KE
