Default Goodyear Duratrac or BF Goodrich KO2?

I am deciding between these two tires for a truck with 275R18 profile. I need an aggressive tire for snow and mud but also want a tire that isn't crazy loud with poor mileage. I think the duratrac may be slightly better on ice which is important but the KO2 may have better wear. I have also heard the duratracs cup.

Any opinions or advice appreciated.

I know they're not on your short list, but have you looked into the Hankook Dynapro AT-M's?

I have a set of those on one of my trucks and a set of Duratracs on my other truck, the Dynapros are way better in snow and ice and have way less road noise.

I put a set of duratracs on my Jeep and they perform very very well off road but they wear incredibly fast on pavement. Much much faster than I figured they would

If this helps the decision, Canadian Tire is putting Duratracs on Sale example 235-85-16 $190, Fontain Tire price $285. They are also putting BF Goodrich Mud Terrain KM2 on sale for 254, same size. Sale starts Feb 17th.

My understanding is that the Duratracs are better in mud and snow. Initially they are good on ice, but the siping isn't very deep so once they have some miles on them, ice traction goes down.

I wanted Duratracs initially, but the more I researched the there were 3 common complaints.

Noise goes up appreciably, Ice traction goes down, and a lot of people said rebalancing was required often.

During all my research the above mentioned Dynapros came up, as did Cooper Discoverer AT/w's. I bought the Coopers. I'm very happy with them, nice ride, quiet, great traction compared to the Goodyear Kevlars I had, and way better on Ice, and snow. An added bonus is gas mileage didn't take a hit either.

If you're set on the your choices I vote Duratrac.

Duratracs are great tire. I got 169000 kilometers on my last set with both on and off road use and no problems whatsoever.

That's amazing, I've always been happy with 100k, and that's not always possible.

I just got 70,000kms on my Duratracs. 3/4 ton, and I am not easy on them. I thought I did good.

Default BF Goodrich KO2

I currently wear the KO2's. I am happy with them purchased from Costco. Had same dilemma last fall, At the end of the day which ever tire you go with will be better than what's currently on your vehicle. I choose the KO2's because I personally have had bad experiences with Goodyear tires.

Can't comment on the Duratracs but I will say that even in the worst highway weather so far this winter my truck feels like it's on rails with the BFG's and they were under $1100 out the door at Costco.

There are two different animals going after the same customers...

Basically, both tires carry the 3PMS (winter) rating and are considered on/offroad tires, with the Duratrac being more offroad aggressive giving up more so on street manners and wear characteristics while the BFG has better road manners but isn't quite as gnarly in the deep goopy stuff.

Both are good tires with slightly different orientation. It just depends on your own personal preferences and what you use your truck for. I sell both of these a lot and my customers like both of them in equal numbers, but that is because I am making sure you know what it is you are buying and what to expect. As long as you are being honest about what you want and choose accordingly, you will be happy either way.

I vote Duratrac. Great tire. Work great on my 3/4 ton diesel in the snow, slush, rain, and dry pavement. Ice not so much.

KO2s are working well for me - about 55 K so far and holding up great on a Tundra.

I want a tire that will get me out of most situations off road but have more wear and tear for pavement. I think I will go with the KO2. Do these ever go on sale at Costco?

After the initial 20k km I think the KO2 will be better on ice any thoughts on this?

Don't even make ice traction a consideration if you hve narrowed it to these two. No matter what anyone is telling you, the fact is the rubber compound firms up at really low temps and neither provides more ice grip than the other at that level, and in the less severe temps the ice traction is not as much of a concern. Pick the tire based on the other qualities that actually are substantially different from each other.

I run KO2's as my winter tire. I took them to Kal Tire and had them sipped. I love these tires for the winter. i would rather a dedicated winter tire but I can't find anything in 35 inch diameter.

Used the KO's on the F-150 for 5 years and still had good tread left .
Then used them on the two 4 Runners and they where great, but I prolly only put 6000km max a year of road and even then it was logging roads.
They where pretty quiet too.

KO2 suck on ice. Duratracs somewhat better. And yes you need to rotate them or the fronts cup. I have well over 100km on my duratracs on a half ton. I was getting about 60 with my one ton.

Default KO2's

Just put a set on my 1 ton and compared to the original BFG KO tires I had on there the ice traction is much better. Some guys like the duratracs and I am sure they are good as well but they are 30% more unless you happen to get them when on sale.

That's crazy impressive. I have a dodge 1 ton quad cab long box, all my truck does is haul (quads, loads of wood and our camping trailer for the most part). I have these tire at stock size and around 45k on them and there is far less than 30% tread left. IMO they don't hold up all that well to abuse, but I'm fine with that and these tires I can honestly say have never let me down.

One of my friends also runs these tires for oil field work and says that so far he will stay with them as he has never had any issues. (Other then tread life). He runs a winter and summer set. His winter ones are studded.

I like how these tire are decently aggressive, yet still able to pull highway speeds with out too much noise.

But I'm not a tire guy. So don't take my word for it.
