Default 250-3000 Savage

Have an old 99 take down in 250 Savage in very good condition. It is very unstable over 100gr but will at least hold some sort of a group with 87gr. There is lots of opinions on line from the twist is wrong for heavier bullets to the barrels is probably pitted. Estimated value from a few hundred to a couple thousand.

Was hoping someone here could enlighten me a bit.

Is Savage reintroducing this model and/or are there replacement barrels availiable?

Is it true that these have a 1-12 twist that was always unstable with heavier bullets?

What is the approx value? It has a brass rotor mag with counter, nice wood hand checkered, pistol grip, original iron sights, SN 222XXX.

Dad would only shoot hand loads through it, but that was 30 years ago and I have no idea what. He never had any trouble hitting things with it. What would be the best load for this gun?

Any info would be appreciated.

Though it might be a good rifle for my 12 year old to learn to shoot on. He's a lefty and everything I own is right. This rifle without cheek rest is the only one that can be shot both ways.

You likely have a 1-14 twist designed for 87 gr bullets although short ogived 100gr RN work in mine.Old pulled Dominions KKSP.The shortest 100 gr available now is the Speer and they also make a 87 gr HOT CORE that works fine on deer.Value without pics around $450-$500 if it's still shootable.Harold

Default Savage info

Thanks Harold,
Your bang on. I was bored over the weekend and serched the archives of the Savage forms and the results were identical to yours. I don't reload so I'm going to ask Dave Henry if he will load me some of the bullets you suggested as I know he shoots a 250.

Thanks again
MK

Dave has a Ruger BA .250 and uses IMR4895.I had better luck 1/4" tighter groups with IMR3031 for both 100gr SPEER and thier 87gr offering.MOA with both out of a lever action too boot!Deer drop like a rock with either bullet and recovered slugs expanded nicely retaining most of thier weight.I also picked up a 700 Classic in .250 and it's great but prefers Win 760.Every gun's different but what a nice round!I know you don't reload but these worked well in my SAV 99 /.250 32.5gr IMR3031/87grSPEER/Win case/Fed mag primer 30gr IMR 3031/100grSPEER/Win case/Fed mag primer...................Harold * remember you can't load a lever action as hot as a bolt best back off a couple a three grains and go from there.
