8mm Remington Mag

Just picked up an 8mm mag at the Red Deer Gun show,looking for any ideas for working up a good hunting load.

My own 8mmremmag liked the 200gr partition ahead of imr 4831.

Hornady makes a 195gr offering as advised IMR 4831 is dandy.....should be able to get heavy ball military surplus for plinking as well.Marstar or Milarm? Harold *The Swedes scrapped for salvage huge quantities of 8X68 mm cheap like borsch 215 gr I recall.Craig Boddington of G+A likes this round as well.

Ive decided on the 180 gr Barnes triple shock ,or the 200gr partition.Now thefun begins.

My first choices would be either the 200gr X-bullet or the 200gr Accubond. I use the 220gr Sierra in my 325WSM and it has perfromed excellently for me, but I would prefer a stouter jacket for the increased velocities you will get especially for close range shots.

Reloder 22, IMR 4350, and IMR 4831 are noted powders in the 8 mm Remington. It is a kicker, with a case capacity equal to a .340 Weatherby. Proper stock fit and design are crucial at this level of recoil. 200 grain Nosler Partitions and 200 & 220 grain Swift A-frames are good bullets in this case. If maximum velocity is not used, the 200 grain Speers are good, accurate bullets. It is unquestionably one of the most potent elk cartridges ever developed.

I believe that the 8 mm Remington magnum was the most unsuccessful cartridge introduced by Remington since WW Two. Nothing against the cartridge, but Remington has a bad track record of dumping cartridges very quickly.

I would think any powder starting at Imr 4350 and going slower should work excellent in your 8mm. I've never loaded for one, but it is very similar to .338 win and 340 weatherby so that should give you some ideas.
