Anybody interested in long range shooting should pony up for this, it would be a very good experience, wether you are actually interested in shooting Fclass or palma competition s or not.
it gives you a good idea of what your rifle will do "out there"....

Those links must work differently on your machine than they do on mine. No mention of a shooting clinic in either one.

Thus far, all I know is that there might be a class on full bore shooting very soon, May 10th. I also know that it is to be held at the Rosebud range, which the .pdf says is "easy to get to".
Finding out more about this event is far from easy to do.

So far, despite several posts from 4 AO site members, the details are still a total mystery.

This particular approach to promoting "Full Bore Rifle Shooting - A Lifetime Sport" in Alberta leaves me scratching my head about simple things like:

- Who is putting on the class?
- What will the participant learn?
- Times and Cost?
- What gun to bring? If I read to the end of the .pdf, I might go to the DCRA site to find out more about calibre and as a result might conclude that I need a DCRA-legal rig worthy of Connaught and Bisley.
- How much ammo?
- How to sign up?

I'm guessing any 6.5mm or better hunting rig would do fine for an introductory course, but then, maybe not???

Maybe the plan is to have Peter Redstone and Glen Taylor (see .pdf) burn up their precious time fielding phone calls about what could easily have been posted right here, from the very beginning...

But hey, what the heck, its only May 3rd and this thing (whatever it is) is on May 10th....so there's plenty of time to play 20 questions.

Then we wonder why shooting/hunting is dying on the vine.

Default APRA Range Day May 10, 2008

Hello everyone. I have to thank Catinthehat for telling me this site existed. Anyway, to try and dispell any and all misinformation, I'll try to outline what's going to go on.
Saturday May 10, 2008 is the day we're running an introduction to fullbore target shooting both F Class and TR (open sighted Target Rifle). Typically this includes a discussion on Range Safety, a description of how the matches are formated, target arrangements including a trip to the butts to seeing how things work scoring etc. Shooting commences after the sundry squading of shooters and a corresponding group to go to the butts and mark targets. After the first group has zeroed and is hitting with regularity, the groups reverse rolls and the marking crew has their turn to shoot. There will also be several Club members there to provide assistance and help you out where it's needed.

Last year we started at 300m and even those who expressed hesitation were actually pleasantly surprised at getting zeroed and on target quite quickly. So.......don't let a number intimidate you. By the time it was over, all the attendees were hitting the bull at 800 meters with everything from .223's to 308's until we ran out of time. Following this there was a lenghty Q&A sessions and all had smiles on their faces. We could have gone farther back but by the time we got to 800m, lack of scope elevation was beginning to show up.

As for equipment, any rifle caliber up to and including .323" (8mm) Fullbore is shot in the prone position with paired firing alternatly at a target, so it's nice to have a shooting mat or blanket. The Scope guy's will need front support ie; bipod, BR front rest or sand bag. A rear bag is also used. Scopes should have enough elevation to allow at least 20 MOA up to put the crosshairs dead on 800m, at least for now. You'll also need at least a 100yd or 100meter zero. We helped a lot of the guys last year to understand what's involved in getting the comeups for elevation in MOA, not clicks. They all learned something and had a blast doing it. Oh yeah, no muzzle breaks allowed.

I'm not quite sure who's going to be assisting everyone that day but there a substantial number of shooters who have already made connections to attend. The more the merrier.

I will state here that this is a fullbore introdution. We will not be shooting steel, random targets, rapid fire anything. Just so we're clear.

I'm so busy at the moment workwise that my attendance is in doubt but I'll make every effort to get down there. For those who are interested, Sunday is scheduled Fullbore Practice and Wind Coaching day that you are also welcome to attend. This session is run strictly per fullbore standard practices and format.

If I can answer any more questions let me know. I wasn't aware of this site until this very minute.

Cheers, Glen

Default More stuff

Forgot, you'll need 50 or 60 rounds, hearing and eye protection. Firing is done single shot only. No loaded magazines. The firing point is strictly supervised with the use of empty chamber flags or bolt removal mandatory during handling and when not laying on the firing point with the rifle on aim. This is for everyone's safety.

Cheers, Glen

The APRA clinic is free for first time attendee's. We have empty chamber flags for 2 bucks. I'm one of the best customers. Follow me around and you'll get one free because I keep losing them.

Thanks Horny

I forgot to tell everyone that the formal festivities will start at 09:00. It would help if everyone was there earlier and then we can get aquainted and get the introductions and visiting started.

Cheers, Glen

Glad to see you onboard , Inspector!
We make our chamber flags with the canadian flag tape from the post office,
and two electrical tie wraps, one cinched around the other.
that way, you can double up the end that goes in the chmaber so it won't fall out.
We can make a pile for a few bucks!

Wow, what a great program you've got there.

I sure could learn more about reticles, moa, and most of all, about wind. Unfortunately, work is on this weekend.

Hmmm.

Homestead Range is between Calgary SW and Kananaskis ctry,
south of the Trans-Canada Hwy.,
on the Homestead road,
and SE of the Seebald Flats campground.

There is a location map on the link found in the first post of this thread:
http://www.albertarifle.com/Fullbore...chure-2008.pdf

Inspector:
Thanks - I hope to make it to one of the other new shooter days, if my varmint rifle can pull it off...

Do you think that perhaps my heavy barrel/bedded/2# trigger/52gr match HPBT/10x Redfield .22-250 (though the ballistics are far from optimal for F-class) would accentuate wind and trajectory effects to such an extent that it would enhance my learning at one of your clinics?

I've shot it at 500M once, experimentally from bags, but only three rounds to ring rams with mucho holdover and Kentucky windage, as I did not want to change my normal zero.

250, if memory serves, JJ Conway from Texas won the inaugural World F Class Championships at Connuaght with a 22-250 so it'll do what you tell it to.

As far as bullets and reading wind. First you have to know the bullet you shoot extremely well as far as what it needs to compensate for what you see in the condition. That just means (example) when you know you have a wind from the left at about 5 kmh by the flags, you know the bullet well enough to put on 2 MOA left and hit center at 400m. If you don't know what the bullet does in a 5 kmh left wind, you don't know how much to dial in or hold off. Does this make sense to you? If not I'll just say that target shooting requires that you really know your bullets flight characteristics intimately. That means lots and lots and lots of shooting. With the same bullet / load.

Cheers, Glen

Inspector, IIRC , the captain of "Team Old Geezer" was using a bullet just a tad bigger than 52 grains!!
