Fishing with flies, on a spin reel

Hey guys. I'm a fishing newbie, but I want to keep on keeping on. I'm going to fish the Bow River in Calgary this weekend and need some advice on lures.

I've had no luck with spoons and cat whisker types. A friend suggested I use flies. I don't have a fly fishing rod (yet).

Can anyone recommend a kind of fly or lure I can use? Perhaps a fly + bobber rig?

(I am aware that the Bow can be tough to catch anything in)

Look at what beeguy is using. Most guys who spincast the bow are tossing those. Rainbow or brown.

Get your self a few stick floats and wagglers, will have you casting flies on spinning gear in no time. Do a thread search on flies and spinning gear we have helped others down this road.

I have yet to try it in the bow but my go to trout lure when nothing is working is a gold blue fox. I usualy carry a few diferent sizes to change up depending on currents and water depth.

Pretty much any rig intended to fish live bait can be used with flys. I've fished them under bobbers, on 3 way rigs, and on a simple splitshot rig. For rivers I find bobbers more complicated if your trying to drift along the botom. A 3 way or drop shot rig is my preference for nymphs while a bobber is needed to fish dry's.

get a rapala F-9 or F-11 in rainbow, brown trout or black/silver.

Wait until 40min before scheduled sunset.

Go to the river and cast it until it is too dark to fish.

Cast upstream on a 45degree angle.

Slowly retrieve. Try pulling it through the water for 6 feet then pausing for 1 second, then repeating.

Be prepared for hard hits at your feet. Have your drag set appropriately (not too tight) which may be confusing for a new fisher.

I use braided mainline with a 3-4 foot mono leader (10-17lbs).

Lots of catchable trout in the fish creek area.

Remember to read the reg's and practice catch and release.

Make sure you have some needle nose pliers and a rubberized net.

There is a time and a place for everything. A brown trout is likely only outdone by the bull shark in what it will stuff down it's gullet.

What I posted is pretty straight forward, go put it to work a couple times and then post pics of your lunker. Couldn't get much easier.

On days when it is too windy to fly fish I will take out my spinning gear with 6lb test mono and attach a casting bubble with a floating fly or nynmph 2 - 4 feet behind the bubble.

I saw a guy at FCP pulling a streamer about 3ft below his bobber get several hits. He did land one nice one.

If you are using a spinning rod, use very light line, 4 lb or lighter, you'll cast further, and a mepps spinner. Put back what you catch.

you think this is a good suggestion for a new fisherman?

Tie a smallish fly directly to your line with about 2 extra feet of line after the fly. Take a coathanger and cut the hook off and cut it in half.. Tie the U shaped piece to the end of your line... Cast out and upstream.. WAIT till it sinks and starts bouncing...slowly retrieve the slack with your rod tip pointed at the sky as high as you can.. The fly isn't that important.. Don't go too big or gaudy.. Think large mosquito.

Ps make sure your fly hook is facing up when tied to the line. If u find your having to pop your rod tip up to keep it moving your coat hanger is too large so trim it down. If your fishing super fast water you may have to twist 2 U shaped hangers together to get it to sink.

I use min 12lbs mono line
