This year was my year for hunting. I took my first deer, a hefty doe, at 304 yards with my .243 loaded with good ol' 100 grn Winchester Super X. Two weeks later I took my first Buck with my modified SKS and one of those Hornady 123 grn SSTs. But I am not voting for either of these calibers. I am voting for the .300 Win Mag, which I bought to hunt with this year but was unable to get in enough practice with it. My bottom line though, is that the best all around cartridge would be the one that you feel the most comfortable about shooting...and shooting well.

Nothing in North America that the old '06 cant handle, but I still like having that little edge. so I pack a 358 norma. Nice and flat shooting with heavier bullets. Almost getting up there to the 375 ballistics.

I seem to always reach for a .270 win, my rifles are easy to shoot well.I use them for all game around here.

Here's another vote for the 7mm rem mag. My all around bullet is either 140 gr Nosler Partitians or 139 gr Hornady Interlocks. That said, what fun would it be to stick to one cartridge or rifle?

If you can handle the recoil, then a 300 win mag. If the recoil is high for you, which it is with a lot of people, then the 3006. My $0.02

I would like to join in this discussion.

I think a .30-06 is the do all. Just my opinion though. I find that from 100 ish to 200 ish grain bullets it is rather capable of almost anything as far as harvesting game goes.

Truth be told, as others here have mentioned, there are quite a few good calibres that meet the criteria. I have not had experience with them all though.

So for me, I personally would reach for the .30-06.

Any standard cartridge would work. 270, 308 win , 30-06........
But for us reloaders we have a better selection ........6.5x55, 7x57, 8x57, 9.3x62
Of course they will all kill effectively, but the metrics are not that boring.

For me it's management of shot placement, felt recoil and adequate knock down power to dispatch game quick and efficiently. Winchester Model 70 in .270. low recoil, good factory load selection found any where and easy to hand load with good selection of bullets and powder.

Same caliber in 1885 or B78 with iron sights would be handy and easy to pack too.

I'm a boring one gun guy, and it's a .270win. Sako 75. I've lost track of the number of animals taken with this rifle. There's something comforting about shooting a rifle that feels like an extension of your arm. I started out with a .300sav but it wasn't well suited to hunting the prairies.

Another Vote for the 280 here, will do everything the 7mm rem mag will do with less powder and non belted. 7mm RM is a great round also though.

I will Always have my 30-06 in my safe though, the ability to load up a a 110gr to 225gr bullet is what I like about them, and the ability to walk into any Canadian tire/Hardware store and there is ammo

First cartridge to come to mind for me is the 30-06 second was 375 H&H but I am not going with either one.

If I could only have one I would grab my 21" factory tapered stainless steel black/gray laminate stocked T/C Contender carbine rechambered from 375 Win to 375JDJ (444 Marlin brass necked down to 375) by SSK Ind the developer of the cartridge.

I would load it with 260gr Accubonds @ 2300fps it is still doing 1800fps @ 300 yards and is crazy/deadly accurate.
