Best all round cartridge? Something in .30 cal. For me it would be the .300 wby as it's been my main rifle since I was 18.
Otherwise, the .300 WM, then the .338 WM, and 3rd choice would be the 7mm

He'd prefer the 175 in it. :-)

HAHA!Well, he would just have to be happy that his 7 was there!
If I were going to use one it wouldn't be with a 275 either, it would be a 160 got sure.

I shoot a 338 wm but it's hard not to agree with ezm.

Too bland, it doesn't excel at anything, and today people want superior ballistics, or a short, super efficient cartridge, and the 30-06 doesn't offer either. It has nothing that stands out to make it appear superior to the other cartridges.

I'm quite confidant in the fact nirvana doesn't exist, therefore I'm just a gun loonie, with an addiction.

I agree that it's bland in aspects. It of course works and I'm not arguing that, was interested to hear some rooting for the smaller more effecient cartridges out there.

I am a big believer in sectional density. I like the math with 7mm and 6.5mm projectiles.

The good 'ole 30-30, many will disagree but it will drop anything I want to eat out to just about as far as I want to carry it back.

Nice small lever gun you can carry for days.

Took my first deer with a 30 30 lever action marlin with a 4 power bushnell! Light, nicely balanced, short and maneuverable. In other woods great for the bush

280 rem with a 140gr tsx or 7mm rem mag with a 160 accubond or partition. Shot and killed lots with both of these with excellent results.

30-06 definitely is the bench mark
If I had to pick one - 300WM
My heart is with a 340wby though.

For "standard" caliber, all around, I would go with 308. Don't need to defend the choice as it's performance speaks for itself. For "not so standard" I would choose 284 Win which I see as being like a 7mm Mag without the blemishes. For "wildcat" I am convinced of the prowess of the 6.5 X 47L which is as tame as a kitten but bites like a Tasmaian Devil.
With great advances in bullet construction during the past ten years it is now possible to tear up the track with a hot rod running a 289 ... no need for the old muscle cars and their 454's.

But that's the magic of it. It does everything fairly well and just simply works. Kind of like the Toyota Corolla of the cartridge world.

As of the last couple seasons, 338-06 is my choice.

Agreed. But sure is still a pleasure to get into a big block with 650 horse. And more pleasing to the ears. I would know!

270 win. Works on pretty much anything in NA, and is cheap to shoot. Not overly complicated like the 3006 with 50 million different bullet styles to give one fits about choosing the right bullet for the job...
