Default One cartridge to rule them all

If you had to choose just one for game such as deer, moose, elk and bear what would it be. What have you had great success with?

I haven't tried it out yet but I'm pretty stoked about my 35 Whelen as a do-all hunting setup.

I have been hunting with the .30-06 for the past 12 years and although a boring cartridge it has got the job done for me and I see no reason to change other than for the simple reason of owning another firearm. From coyotes to moose it has been very effective.

Any number of cartridges out there will do it, I know the B&C 29 have been killed with everything from the '06 and up.
For the animals I hunt a .303 or a .308 in good rifle do just fine as do the 7X57, 260, 6.5X55..........

My personal favourite for the things you mentioned is my 30-06 and i would not trade it or sell it for anything.

If the 30-06 were just invented this year it would be hailed as a modern marvel cartridge capable of killing everything North America has to offer, all in a package with very manageable recoil. And, it wouldn't just be marketing hype. It would be the gospel truth. Some things are just hard to improve on.

I've used a 7mm Mag for 45 years.....shot from antelope to moose and bear. Great caliber, IMO.

I think a 300wm is pretty universal. Could be used for everything including big bears.

There's a handful of 'Betty' cartridges: .30-06, .270 Win, .308 Win, 7 x 57, 6.5 x 55

Then there's a bunch a 'Veronica's' as well, they have cachet but are high-maintenance or you're sacrificing something (often magazine capacity and barrel life)

Did you pick a Betty or a Veronica for the woman in your life? (Betty's are where it's at)

What's the saying about a one-gun hunter?

I think that any rifle from .270 on up that you practice with and use almost exclusively is going to be a better choice for any big game in Alberta than the gun you select from your golf bag of choices that you only shoot a couple times a year (or less).

Bought a 7600 30-06 to go into my collection of pump action rifles. Honestly after how it ended my buck so easily with not much meat loss I now have a new favorite rifle in my locker. I shot a coyote with it as well and left the same size hole as my brothers .223 when he got a coyote. My 30-06 didn't even exit the coyote. Definelty 30-06 going with me on every big game hunt till I die.

It would be hard to argue with the 30-06 ....... lots of bullet selections to do almost any job well and relatively economical to shoot.

If I had to have only one cartridge ...... that would likely be my choice.

Anyone fans of the smaller more efficient cartridge designs lately? I should of known the overwhelming majority would be 3006, It is surely a great one but there are others no?

One must realize of course, that all game/all distances is not everybody's cup of tea, and most people that hunt all game don't usually do it with one rifle, and many people do not hunt all the North America 29, so one can narrow the playing field considerably.
That is why I like the medium to smaller sized cases as oopposed to the belted magnums or even the '06 sized cases in most cases.

I have killed more big game animals with the 7mmstw, than with any other cartridge, and my go to rifle is still a 7mmstw.

300wsm and second choice would be 30-06.
Either would be launching a Barnes bullet.

Not likely, without the long history, and huge advantage in time before most modern cartridges were conceived, it might not be a big seller at all. If it was only introduced this year, it could very well be a failure as far as sales are concerned, and it could fade away in a few years.

I don't think so. Too versatile in terms of bullet weight and it just works.
