Arrow Pbr - point blank range. Let’s talk

Been awhile since anyone brought this up. How important is this to you? Do you have a minimum? What are your pbr goals? What are you happy with? What is your pbr? What size is your pbr? Ya that that didn’t roll off the tongue quite as anticipated.

When I used to shoot a Grendel, my pbr was 100 yards max and I was happy to hit a 5 gallon pail. Sometimes it wouldn't even go through both sides of the pail, no exit wound. Then I got an SKS and things really improved dramatically.....

(How could I not go there? )

Ok, really I like to zero my rifles for 200 yards, tends to be an inch and bit high at 100, and 2.5 -4" low at 300 depending on what rifle. Those are rough figures, but I'm comfortable putting any of my rifles on vitals out to 300 and I'm good. And I haven't actually taken game past 250 yards anyway, so I'm comfortably inside a 8" circle or less from 25 to 300 yards. I don't need to over think it either....

Default Not important to me

Using this particular rifle, the calculation recommends that I should have a zero of 231 yards in order to reach out to 274 yards to stay within within a 6 inch circle. I've never been inclined to think in terms of PBR. All of my rifles have ballistic reticles, usually zeroed to 200 yards, so anything beyond that is going to be associated with drop down hash marks.

Our shots arent far. A 100 yard zero works well for us but I normally set 1.5" high at 100.

If I needed more, probably a 200 yard zero

Target/ long range rifles are zeroed at 100 and dialed. Hunting rigs are zeroed at optimum MPBR / caliber/particular load. The mil/moa reticle is then used with dope recorded for each drop. All my iron sighted rifles are zeroed so the peeps will work out to 200 yds with no more than 6" of drop. I keep drop chart or dope book with each gun. My coyote rig is zeroed for so that I get close to MPBR on a coyote ( just under 300) and my DOA reticle works out to 320,420,520,620 yds. By playing around with my load and exact zero I can pretty much hold on fur to 300 then use my reticle for further shots.
I prefer to keep it as simple as possible while shooting game so a MPBR zero works for me...just know your max distance for the gun your packing and hold on fur.

Every big game rifle I own is sighted 3.25 high at 100, which gives a 300 yard zero and allows me to hold on fur to 360 on my primary guns. For 90% of all game this makes the gun point and shoot to 360 yards. I tape a verified drop chart to the stock. I don't twist dials on big game hunting rifles, I use B&C or Swaro BRX reticles.

I used to zero my scopes based on PBR, but now my target and varmint scopes are zeroed at 100y, and I twist turrets to shoot farther. I use the Swarovski BRH reticle for big game hunting, with my main crosshairs zeroed at 200m. I prefer the BRH over twisting turrets for big game, because the BRH retical is far quicker than twisting turrets, and things often happen very quickly.

I typically zero all my rifles at 200 meters , and check at 100 and 300.
Where I normally hunt there is not time to twist turrets after ranging, and often not a lot of time at all. Most of my animals are shot inside 150 yards.

I usually zero at 200 yards and dial. I do lots of coyote calling as well so prefer things a little tighter inside 250 yards. I do have one or duplex set up on a 24” barrel 270 big game only set up that’s zero 250 and hash marks line up for 350 and 450 and where post thickens back up is 550, so no chart necessary, easy to remember. Have a couple 294 yard ewe and 343 yard whitetail with it, works pretty well. Used to gapping and hold overs from bow hunting with fixed pin sights. But for more versatility I am definitely preferring the locking zero single rotation dial up with a 200 yard zero.

Most of my big game rifles are 3”-3.25” high at 100 which puts me dead on around 270-300 yards and between 8”-12” low at 400. I don’t want to pick a hash mark in the scope or dial anything. If I’m less then 250-275 yards I hold bottom third, 275-350 I’ll hold more in the middle and closer to 400 I hold top third. If the animal is more then 400 yards out I get closer. The rare time I need to head shoot one I consider the range and where the bullet will be relative to line of sight but that’s not very often.

I agree with this method . All my hunting rifles are zeroed at 265 yds. It doesnt take much effort to hold a bit over or under out to that range if that becomes necessary. None have a max trajectory path more than 5 inches above or below LOS out to that range. Much further and I pass or try to get closer.

I’d say under 150 feet for me since moving up here Cat and it happens fast.

A nice little 4 point Whitetail fell at 50 feet in the timber for me last Sunday when it was snowing out. Id call it point blank throat patch. A fat sucker in his prime...for eating anyways...lol. It reminded me so much of timber hunting Blacktails back on the Island. Snow made the 1-1/2km drag slightly easier too.
