I'll be using my carbine for Whitetail hunting in November just put a new scope on her yesterday shooting great, Getting to like single shot lighter guns that's for sure.

I had been planning on a semi auto carbine for the brush, but... JT and the Liberals stopped that one... I went back to the 45-70 lever action. With hard cast bullets there is very minimal meat damage, and I just plain like the rifle and cartridge. If you cast and load your own bullets, very economical to shoot. I like the bullsey/unique loads. About 450 rounds to the lb of powder.

These are older pics. I have since changed the rear attachment to a Velcro buttstock attachment point similar to ones designed for m16 style rifles.
With this carry method the rifle offsets the pack weight similar to carrying 2 5 gal pails instead of one. The gun hangs at an angle with the muzzle at your left knee( right hand shooter) and buttstock at your right arm pit. Simply shoulder the rifle and fire. No need to un-clip the gun. Since the gun is not wider than your body width as it hangs it doesn't interfere with trekking poles in any way.

I run two... one is a 9,3 x 62 m98 action and the other a 308 sakol579... 308 is +/- 1moa with irons given the day and the 9.3 is 1.5 - 2 +/- given the day..scoped... handy and light... i am currently thinking of trying a trijicon or aimpoint on the 9.3... anyone else do this to a medium to large bore???

Like I said above. Tried red dot on a 45-70 SxS double rifle, a Marlin, and on a 308 Scout rifle. Didn't like the way they work on any of them. With driven game you are pretty much shooting 30 - 75 yards, and to be honest, open sights are still a better choice if your eyes are good enough. Over 75 yards and specially at 150-250 yards the magnification on a 1x4 is a far better deal.

Have not found that the difference between a few inches of barrel making a huge difference. I do tend to grab a carbine, with a 20" or slightly shorter barrel, but then many times it will be a 22 or 23" barreled gun. Makes more difference having a rifle I am familiar with and having a decent scope that goes down to a low magnification.

As Cat and others mentioned the action makes a difference. My sxs shotgun with 20" barrels is very nice to carry around. I seldom find myself in brush that is so thick that I can't swing the barrel. If I am, the noise and difficulty getting through it, makes for a poor hunt.

Just listened to a podcast by gunwerx on this issue. They like myself have found 18"-22" to be more than adequate for even what we would call extreme long range. Using barrels in the 18" range chambered in cartridges like 7mm SAUM and 26 NOS they are getting crazy results in more portable systems. Interesting listen for those who are interested.

I listened to most of that podcast but didn't hear anything new, however I am not of the extreme long range hunting with supresssors or muzzle brake school I've thought .
I also found that there is a point of no return when it comes to short barrels .
The 16.5" barrel on my Highwall did not balance well at all .

Dick thats a nice little set up. I just recently accuired a mannlicher stocked no1 in 6.5x55 and it is a beautiful thing. My go to are my brno 22h's with 20" barrels in 7x57 or 6.5x57
Iron sights QD rings low power scopes.

My unicorn rifle is a brno 21F (23" barrel, full stock) in 7x64

Certainly not new news for someone with your experience and knowledge. But for some packing a 300wm is minimum for deer/ bear and would consider a 303 in a single shot to be severely undergunned and handicapped.
It used to be popular opinion that long barrels equal speed and speed is king. High bc bullets and faster twist rates along with turrets have changed that over the last few years making smaller barrel rifles able to compete even in the ELR game
A 16.5" barrel on a highway would feel much like shooting a pistol
A 16.5" barrel on a bolt action or lever swings and handles just fine.

Yup P.O. Ackley did some tests many years ago , cutting off an inch at a time on a .260 cartridge ( can't remember which one) and the results were very telling .
That little Highwall is called a trapper model and within reason would fit the bill but it is also made in 45/70 which is really " out there"!!
For a hunting rifle it was simply too short in the balance department .
20" is perfect or as you say the 16.5" with a short action bolt rifle
