Default Rain Gear for Sheep hunt

Looking for some ideas on lightweight packable rain gear for sheep hunting. Kuiu has a decent looking system but are there others comparable or better?

A work colleague of mine, a far more dedicated hunter than me, has used the Kuiu Yukon jacket and pants for a couple of years. He doesn't compromise on gear.

For an alternative, you could try First Lite - I believe Jim Bows Archery sells their products.

The kuiu Yukon set is bomber. But way more than a guy needs for Alberta sheep hunting. It is more suitable to Alaska. Plus it is heavier. The chugach NX is all you need. Pricey but the best rain gear available I think.

I have yet to go on a sheep hunt myself, however I do love backpacking. I use a Marmot Precip jacket and set of full-zip pants. They're incredibly light-weight (I think about 24 oz in total for both?), packable, and reasonably priced and often on sale. I believe I got mine on sale at Atmosphere for 30% off. The only downside is they're not heavy-duty for bushwacking. For sitting out a summer rainstorm of two in the mountains though, they're pretty hard to beat for the price.

I have been using the Sitka Dew point rain gear last few years. They are the lightest most packable set you'll find. I use them strictly for wet weather/winter shell. Its not gonna stand up to constant sitting in rocks and grinding while glassing,or bush whacking. It will keep you dry but if you want durable rain gear you can wear more feely, look at Sitka storm front, or the Kuiu yukon set. Both are going to be far heavier and less packable though.

I've got both Sitka and Cabelas's goretex gear. Sitka is almost 3x the cost, but I find the Cabelas just as good of quality.

I stopped carrying rain gear. It doesn't rain in the Alberta mountains in September, it only snows.
Maybe a sil tarp / poncho.

Use Kuiu but heard Cabelas is good as well and a lot less money. No experience relative to its performance. I do know my Kuiu gear has not let me down which is so important when doing multi day sheep hunts.

So have I and its a typical Alberta fall in the mountains. The chugach is all I have needed. You want to carry the heavier set by all means that's your choice.
Keep it together, Rob

Some helly Hansen impertec green pants, a carhart shoreline jacket that is heavy enough for smashing thru the thick stuff yet packable. I have used this rain gear hunting in the northern bc mountains, the northern Rockies in Alberta on sheep hunts and winter dirt biking on Vancouver island. Seen snow, sideways sleet, rain and hail on the mountains and wet west coast snow on my dirt bike. I know a few guys who use the helly impertec jacket and pants for a few years with good results.

Spend the most on a good quality jacket IMO. I seem to rarely use my rain pants in the rain, but more so when glassing for long periods. A good lightweight hiking pant with a DWR coating dry fairly quick and gaiters keep your boots dryish.

I have the sitka cloudburst jacket and have been very happy with it and a OR jacket that is lighter, but not as waterproof. Instead of pit zips, the OR has zippers on the sides of the jacket which I have grown to dislike.

After a few years the breathable rain gear , starts to become more breathable n less rain gear, good idea to check it before the hunt,
There's food products that will breath new life into it .

Used Sitka storm front for last handful of seasons. Will be giving Kuiu ultra a try this year.

Ebay, got the army surplus lite gortex jacket and pants the most current. Wear the pants when sitting in and trudging snow and never soaks through. Decently light also and not expensive. Down side it is nosiey but in a rain storm dont think it matters much.

X 10! Best lightweight stuff out there.

Wear it constantly on the troller, in the hills, bush & mountains of BC and more. Will keep you DRY under the heaviest rainfall, extremely light, and damn tough for just how light they are. Forest Green for me...

Cheers,
Nog

I like Arc'Teryx gear, but it I found their rain gear VERY noisy. So much so that I paid the return shipping to send it back.

If I traded in my kuiu chugach I would go to a event material rain gear lite weight, tough and nothing breaths better.

Just bough the Kuiu Yukon jacket and pants. I'll post something when they arrive. I'm taking them to NZ to hopefully chase after some tahr and chammy.

I've been using the First Lite Boundary system for the last 2 seasons and I love it. They have a new Vapor Starlight system that is an even better system. I'm waiting on MVTR numbers but they'll be at the top of the list I'm sure. I'll be getting inventory of this system, it's due to ship to me on the 15th of June.
