Default Bow river winter conditions

Hey everyone,

Looking at the weather forecast, I was thinking of making a trip down from Edmonton to Calgary and dust off the ole fly rod this weekend. Can anyone local give me a quick update on the river conditions. Do you think it will still remain fishable this weekend after the big snow and warmer temps?

Cheers

The Bow is unfishable maybe 10 days a year (not including days below -5C, where it is technically still fishable, just somewhat frustrating). 3 or 4 of those days are when the weather warms up for the first time.

If I were a betting man, I would predict the Bow would be a wall of slush on Sunday/Monday. It has been surprisingly cold in Calgary and we an Edmonton-like amount of snow. There will definitely be a couple of unfishable days over the next 10 days, but it is hard to predict when it will start.

The other unfishable days are couple days before the river crests during run-off and the odd day following a torrential rainstorm.

I would recommend waiting until next weekend before making the 6 hour round trip. By next Friday, the terrestrial snow melt, river break up, and ice shelves will probably stabilize.

Default Bow

Another thing to keep in mind is the amount of snow on city streets which makes for a daily run-off in itself usually the muddy variety..... with the way the fish got beat on last winter with no snow they can use a break anyways

The bow is fishing great. Just try to come on a weekday so you avoid the hordes of people. The river crawling with people today...me being one of them.
