Default load testing done, now I'm puzzled.

Finished load testing with varget powder.
Here's the results.
Best load is also the second slowest at 2496 fps hope I can still shoot 800 meters competition with it.
2nd Fastest load 2520 fps was .800 but if I eliminate the low flyer it would have been .504
All groups are 5 shot's
SAVAGE 10 TR no modifications. Viper 20x scope
Shooting off hood if truck. I think if.I.had a good rest I coukd have done better.

When load testing, I generally shoot two five shot groups with each charge weight ... pick the best "pair" ... tinker with seating depth (again with two groups) ... and then shoot at least half a dozen groups to confirm. Small groups that are not repeatable don't mean much to a load test. If you are shooting long range, you will obviously need to do some testing at longer range to sort out vertical dispersion. Looks like lots of potential, definitely proper bags etc are a big benefit.

In general, I always try to go with the load which produces the least amount of vertical. The problem I see here is that your shooting position- over the truck hood- may actually be inducing some of your vertical so it becomes a little difficult to know just what the cause may be.
I will shoot some at 100 yards but always do most of my testing at 300m. This is far enough to give some indication of how the load is doing but close enough that I can handle the wind reasonably well. Of course a large factor is that 300m is what I have!
The 178 A-Max at around 2500 fps will work just fine out to 900 though the trajectory will be a bit of an arch. I think you will do OK. Leeper

Thanks for the help! I was getting some vertical for sure.
I'll takea bench. And some bags next time, I was hoping to.get a faster load to shoot as good as the slower one,
I'll make another batch and run through it again, from what I can see.I think I can get this thing shooting well under 1/2 moa.
I'll test at 300 next time also like you said.

"Well under 1/2 MOA" would be great to see. Maybe consider doing one of the CHALLENGES while you are doing your load testing? There are three that would be a good fit for your rifle. The open 1/2" at 100M, the factory heavy barrel under 3/4" at 100M, or the open sub 1/2MOA at 300M. I will bring them to the top in the event you are interested in giving it a whirl.

Isn't shooting off the hood of the truck illegal?

What are these challenges you speak of?
Open 1/2? are these competition classes?
Im sure it will do it. already shot under 1/2 with different loads , Im just trying to get it even tighter, but something tells me i may not be able to squeeze much more out of her

Bowhunter36 , I brought them to the top so you can choose one or all if you are so inclined. They are not a "competition", just a fun way to test your rifle, loading and hold. Read "the Rules" governing each and post your successfull targets.
EDIT: The AO version is a repost I took from CGN Precision Rifle forum. You will find them in that section as they are "stickied" at the top of the thread. Although never intended as a "comparison" between shooters, the original CGN series updates the "smallest group" and "smallest average" in the OP. To take that element of competition out of the game, I removed that portion on the AO version.

Definitely keep your up orientation when taking/posting pictures - we can't really tell if the stringing is vertical or horizontal ...

Remember when measuring group size that you are drawing the smallest circle that covers all of the holes, then subtracting the bullet diameter. The one with the 0.728" reading is actually close to 0.860". Measuring a spread is not accurate if the group is spread out left/right and up/down.

Thanks, I'll be shooting it this week, and I will post the pics as soon as I'm finished shooting, I'll shoot 5 at 100
And 5 at 300.
It will be from a bench and bags thus time though lol.
Not off the truck, hopefully. That will help out a bit.
I'll keep you posted

Good on you bh36! Hope the weather cooperates. Too warm and that barrel will get pretty toasty if you push each set of 25 through too quick.
