Decide how much you want to spend on a box of ammo, determine what cartridge that dollar figure gets you in a .284 or .30 caliber, get a good quality bolt gun in said cartridge. Done.

Gee,..that doesn't make a discussion much fun...

Everyone knows he's looking for the 7mm Rem Mag in a (insert favourite bolt action rifle make/model here)........$2000+?.....maybe a Sako?

Buy a Sako or Wetherby in the largest caliber you can comfortably shoot

Yes, as far as I'm concerned, I do have some firearms that I would consider pricey, depending on whom you talk to. Perhaps not so much in your opinion. You ask me if I'm stuck? I'm not sure what you mean by that, could you explain?

This is a question that will be answered with as many opinions as facts
At the price point without glass, it's not what's best it is what you want .
I am quite comfortable hunting any animal in North Anerica with my rifle ,Many would not be.

Kimber, or customize something that's already in your safe.

I saw a rifle that Southetman put together for his home in New Zealand
Cartridge as 260 Remington, gun weighs well under 7 pounds ALL IN - built to carry and kill critters .not shoot at the range!
It is a Kimber , I think it is in an Alberta Wildcats stock .

The best rifle is the one you have experience with, calibre doesn't matter anywhere near as much. If you believe that a 2 k rifle and 2k glass will make you a better hunter then I have a Sako for you.

I have a Tikka 308 that I have done stock work done , custom painted and bedded. Installed titanium action screws, pillars and recoil lug. Bolt and barrel have been fluted and flutes have been painted. Bolt shroud was replaced with a titanium bolt shroud. Bottom metal was replaced with aluminum oversized trigger guard. Titanium and Carbon Fiber bolt handle. Air pocket limb saver was installed and topped with a Swarovski scope and tally ultralights. Into the gun including the scope for about 3500 and it is a better handling, shooting and packing gun than any of the true customs I have owned or shot. Also like this gun a lot better than my finnlight.

You could get into something like this with exactly the aftermarket stuff you want in several different guns that offer aftermarket add on

I bought it off Jess, that on here,
it was a lot more than $2000, but it also weighs 5lbs 2 oz, scope ammo etc, Mpi Ultralight stock and lots of other changes, started life as a Kimber Montana .243

Yea its for carrying round the mountain's,(southern Alps) but its not real pleasant to sight in,
Buts its been stacking em up, the last six months, two deer, a pig and about two dozen goats.
But so has my sako finlight in 2506, its set up with suppressor, so gets the call up on farm land,

Does this $2000 dollar limit, include scope and mount's.

My $2,000 plus rifle
Custom barrel cambered in 303 British . The rifle shoots everthing from 125 t 215's super well.
Cat

Quick release mounts with a 6X Leupold that goes in my pack for shots that are outside the realm of the express sights

Kepplinger single set trigger fr when I have time to put the scope on.

Yep that rifle is just about perfect for hunting, med weight, fine wood and deep blued steel,
Just that 03 British bit to change,
300H&H all the way.

I already have a belt - it holds up my pants!!
However, that Ruger No.1 would have been nice!

Rio, I have had numerous Coopers, Kimbers, Sakos, Forbes, Luxus etc...

After having had over a half dozen Kimbers, I can confidently say that I feel they offer the best value for the money. The Montana is a hunting machine. The Classic Select is a gorgeous wood stocked rifle. Action, accuracy, trigger, light weight. They are a wonderful combination of all those attributes.

As for cartridge, I just don't think you can do much better than a 280 Rem in a long action or 308 in a short action.

My custom built Sako in 25-06 Mashburn that was built in the late 60s, all that is needed anywhere in North America for deer and the big moose.

Default 2000.00 plus

You can spend that kind of money on a custom, and then find out later that the resale value on it will not come anywhere close.
I have gone both routes in the past, custom and off the shelf. I have to say that I am a huge fan of the new Blasers. So many options, you can change it up with, if you get tired of the caliber. Heck, for about a 700.00 bolt assembly you can keep one gun in the safe that converts to either right or left handed!
I have a few of the blaser R8 models. Three barrels covers hunting for pretty much anywhere in the world. 9.3x62 for the bigger stuff, the good old 30-06 for everything in between, and a 22-250 barrel for the varmints. I purposely went to this route to avoid having to change up the bolt face, but if you want to buy the magnum, it can be changed out without tools in about thirty seconds.
I can use the same scope assembly (obviously you would have to re-sight between different barrels, or you can buy multiple scopes accordingly).
Some people refer to this set-up as the "lego" gun. It is up to your imagination how you want it to look for your next hunt!

$2000 gun only....the kimber Mountain ascent. 280 AI if you reload, 7 mag or 308 if not. Your choice long or short action.

My dream "one gun": MOA evolution extreme summit in 7 mag. That's over $5 g though.

Why not get a gunsmith to build exactly what you want?? Also, where in Alberta would you be hunting?? You'd probably choose a different rifle for bush hunting as compared to flat prairie hunting...

A 26 or 28 Nosler would be a good gun if done up right for long range.

For shorter ranges in the bush, get a 45-70 or 500 S&W lever action...

My humble opinion... Ask Gitrdun what that's worth... lol

One gun is all that is needed.
More are fun, but you can do it all with one, at least i have no problem with mine

Cat now you are just talking crazy. It's impossible to hunt everything with one gun. Just ask my wife. I have had to explain it to her several times why so many gun safes are required. Below is a breakdown of what I feel is required.

17hmr-gophers
22lr- plinking
22wmr- beavers
22-250 long range gophers/coyotes
243win- whitetail deer
6.5x55- mule deer/target
270 win- small elk and moose
300wm- large elk/large moose
45/70 short range bear gun
6.5-284 mid range target
7LRM long range target.

Then you have sub classifications as single shots, levers, and bolt guns required in various cartridges as well. So for hunting in Alberta it's next to impossible to only own one
