When I had a 300 savage I found Remington 150 grain at cabelas all the time. Not sure about now.

It's a great cartridge. Ammo is available if you keep an eye out. I've bought it at Canadian Tire.
In it's intended use and range it's a very effective cartridge. In a lever gun like a savage 99 it's a dandy. In a modern bolt action there are probably faster cartridges I'd choose.

What would you use it for as intended use and range ?

It was one of the early mid range cartridges with a rimless design which made feeding simpler.
I personally prefer it over 30-30 win because of the rimless cartridge and superior ballistics (speed).
Intended use ? Any big game in Alberta other than bison to 250 yards ?
Depending on the gun it's in the 300 savage is a nice mid range cartridge with easy recoil but it does give up some range to the .308 and 30.06 families.

It was Savage's attempt to reach 30-06 ballistics in a lever action and although it did not quite reach that level it is still a fine deer cartridge.

I have seen a few Remington 760 pumps around recently in that cartridge.

At first glance, 300 Savage brass looks a lot like 308!

Cause it was used to develop the 7.62x51 Nato

And since the 300 Sav. was the parent case for the 308 Win / 7.62 NATO you can if needed reform either back to 300 Sav. using just standard 300 Sav. FL resizing dies. Other than a couple boxes of Win. Super X I originally got with my Sav. 99 all my brass is made for converted brass an chamber just fine in my rifle with no neck turning.

I especially like the NATO brass as it's thicker and will last a long time with my cast bullet loads which actually give me slightly higher MV with an identical cast load in converted 308 brass.

I shoot a .300 savage. I get my ammo from Phoenix Gun range in Edmonton AB. They usually have 3 different brands, I shoot the Hornady soft tips. Shoots great, good price. They also sell Federal. Cabelas rarely has it and the sports store in south common usually carries federal a as well. You can also order bullets and casings off Hornadys website.

Default look around

At rural Co-op stores and even Walmart. It kills me seeing new/young shooters buying ammo for $40-$50 a box where they bought their gun when the same stuff is $20 at a chain store. The best bet is to get a set of dies and hook up with somebody that reloads.it is a solid 300 yard round. Also cruise gunshows......Harold

I still shoot the 300 savage as well its my only rifle. Does the trick on anything you hit like any other bullet. hornadys were available at p&d last fall. Remington core are still available and federal as well. Both in 150/180gr. I believe winchester has stopped offering. They are getting hard to find tho, wholesale and bass pro, usually have 2-3 boxes at first of season. But even core lokts are edging $40 a box now.

I wondered why they 300 Savage cartridges seem to be available in a 150 or a 180 grain bullet. It seems like the 300 Savage would be a good candidate for a 165 grain bullet...

There isn't a lot of people shooting these. Hand load and you can have whatever weight u want. We are actually lucky anyone still loads it commercially and they are only going to load what sells at least reasonably well. Hand loading I actually put 130 grain bullets in them. Great accuracy and pretty impressive speed.
