Timberland Supply in Edmonton. It's a 24-inch mill and runs about $300.

peeled logs won't dull your chain as fast, just a thought.

Thanks for the tip. What are you using to peel your logs? I looked at the Log Wizard but decided to hold off. Seems like a pain to hook up.

Got the log wizard Rob , ordered a new bar and drilled and mounted it ,, just as simple as changing a chain simple and works awesome for peeling any log.

That's good to know. I'll most likely be getting one in the future as I have to build a skinning shack and I don't feel like peeling by hand.

Doug , I can't find my paper work on it , but I found the box it came in and you could do a search on it. "LOG WIZARD " Mfg. by Goldec Int . Equipment Inc. Spruce Grove Ab , Canada.
If I remember correctly , I think the log wizard , new bar , and new chain were only $ 300.00 , not too bad if you have a lot of peeling and paining to do.
As far as the blades go , they are a standard 3 inch plainer blade.
I hope that helps. Cheers.

Here's an interesting log peeler.

Not sure how well it would work on conifers though.

Default Snare Prep

Managed to get some snare prep done. Have several more to go yet but I got a good start on them anyway.

those look great! Rob. Nothing like home brew

Have my 9 year old daughter spray painting marten boxes right now. Camo colours, with the paint they seem to last a little longer and she gets to have fun with dad.

Rob
What are you using when you boil your snares, just bakeing soda or something else? Did mine with soda last year, seemed to work well, no complaints from the coyotes.
Seeing you guys preparing makes me want to head out to the cabin this weekend.

Nothing but the forest. I boil a mixture of pine, spruce, bark, grasses etc for about an hour. Then I remove all the crud, fire in the snares and let them go for about 1/2 to one hour. Then I hang them on a pole to dry and then into a Ziplock bag with a sprig of spruce etc. This has always worked real well for me, and like you say, no complaints from the 'yotes.

Nice bridge work Rob. The problem in the mountain's is bridges don't seem to last unless they're built up higher than spring run off and all the debris that comes down-stream with it. I've lost some nice ones over the years. How long to run that alaska mill down the side of your log?

That particular creek is a tributary to the main one on my line, plus it's near the headwaters so I should be okay. Having said that, I know the problems you've had so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The planks are 7-feet long, about 5 minutes on a 8-inch wide plank, at least double that on the planks that were 14 to 16-inches wide.

Nice 357!

In good marten country how far apart do you put your boxes?

We got out 24 boxes these past weeks, small line only running 35 boxes in total.

Thanks we were using 700m so we are in the ballpark.
Last year was the first time in 20 years that I trapped marten. Showed the partner that we had marten on the line. He was only snaring coyotes and snaring the odd lynx & fisher before I became a partner.

Here is the new marten boxes that we made this year with a bait door. Should speed up baiting & rebaiting

It's not as easy as putting a trap every half mile or so. You need to access the habitat and set accordingly. I go miles without a set where there are no marten and have sets a 100 yds apart in marten travel corridors. Always good to set on fresh tracks
