Anyone been to Chain lakes this week? I'm heading there this afternoon, but I'm wary of ice thickness there

He really does seem to be the only one that catches the elusive pigeon whites haha

chain south of Longview had about 10" near shore last weekend and maybe 7" a little ways out where I was fishing (on the south end). I also saw a couple people fishing the north end but have heard ice is generally sketchier there

You talking about Chain Reservoir in the South or central Alberta Chain lakes? Heading out to Chain Reservoir tomorrow with the kids, wondering what this warm weather is doing to the ice.

Any updates on Mcgregor? A bit worried that with the heat over the last few days. May wake the boat up vs bringing ice fishing gear. Any updates would be appreciated if folks have been out.

Well dang, I’m really glad you didn’t take the wrong step & thanks. Will be super cautious. Think most of the southern reservoirs are probably in similar conditions. Never thought I’d say this but hope it gets cold soon!

Chain lakes reservoir, just west of Nanton, south of Longview. About 7"-9" of ice this evening. Few fellas out there. Seen a couple of blokes pulled about 7 rainbows out. Nothing for me as usual though

Sounds like the wife and I are gonna make a rip to Rochon on Buffalo tomorrow and see what the Pike and Burb bite is like. Getting some prep in before we hammer Sunbreaker for the Sylvan Opener next weekend... I'll be sure to report back with ice conditions etc...

Thanks man - appreciate it. Do you access from the boat launch at the PP or is there a better way out...?

Turn right shortly after entering the village. Fish the bay. Park at the giant fish. You’ll see this. Can’t miss it.

Oh. And fish where the other tents are. The bay is shallow but where the others are fishing is a deeper hole about 10 feet deep. You will see the trail going to the hole and all the other previous holes from fishers.

We always do! We are nothing if not conservationists. It pains me to see people keeping fish before they get a chance to be trophies.

Thanks to Talkin Moose for the intel. It's been a fun day catching 5lb snakes. One guy had a decent 10+lber on a tip up. At least one burbot that we saw. Tons of people out here and way too many kids screaming. Oi vey.

Good day in the sun tho!

Was out on crawling yesterday, 8” of good clear ice in the bay we fished, pretty consistent thickness. We were north west side of lake.

Buddy was out on Newell the day before. 8-9” where they were fishing on south west side.

Use caution if out on Pigeon. Ice has not formed in a uniform fashion. Pockets with 14” of ice without snow cover, pockets with only 6” of ice where snow cover exists including a large amount of slush beneath the ice. Not fishable where slush was encountered as water was murky and visibility was zero yet only 50yrds away lots of ice and crystal clear water. Have never encountered such conditions in all my years of fishing.

Chain Lakes Reservoir- Dec 6 did not have tape measure but at least 6" clear ice. Only 1 bite in a few hours though.
