Convicted killer Travis Vader will be eligible to apply for "unescorted temporary absences" as early as next month.

Vader was sentenced to life in prison on Jan. 26, after being found guilty of manslaughter in connection to the 2010 deaths of Lyle and Marie McCann, aged 78 and 77.

At the time, Court of Queen's Bench Justice Denny Thomas pronounced that Vader would serve a life sentence, be ineligible for parole for seven years, and be under a 10-year weapons prohibition and lifetime restricted weapons prohibition.

Information provided by the Parole Board of Canada to the Journal shows Vader, because of the stop-start nature of his case, could apply for "unescorted temporary absences" on March 13, 2017.

Temporary absences may be granted for such things as medical or administrative reasons or community service, family contact or compassionate purposes and just because Vader is eligible to apply for the absence, it does not mean he will be granted one.

According to Correctional Service Canada, temporary absences may be granted if an inmate does not "present undue risk to society during the absence", "it is desirable for the inmate to be absent from the institution for one of the reasons for which temporary absences may be granted", "the inmate's behaviour while under sentence does not preclude authorizing the absence" or "a structured plan for the absence, has been prepared."

The 45-year-old will be eligible to apply for day parole on Sept. 13, 2019, and full parole on March 13, 2020.

The day after receiving his sentence, Vader's lawyers filed an appeal in which Vader asked for his conviction to be set aside and for him to receive either a stay of proceedings or an acquittal.

If a new trial is ordered, Vader asks it be by judge and jury.

Vader can apply but he will lose the value of the stamp and the cost of the envelope. I am also eligible to apply for astronaut training for the next Spacex launch..my chances of success are about the same as Vaders.

And people wonder why I think we need independence. This right here is why! To much precedence under Canadian law for us to change much. Where as under new laws there would be no precedence and we could make the laws harsher on people like Travis Vader.

While the title gets the blood boiling thinking he could be eligible, i know he has no hope for a long time of this happening. My bigger fear is a appeal is granted that puts him back on the streets awaiting a new trial.

Media likes to hype, this is non-news. He will not be getting un-escorted absences.

I don't know which I blame more...the media for posting a 'what if', or the gullible people who only read the headline and will go off on a tangent.
If one reads the entire article it says that a prisoner may be granted absences IF they are (in essence) a model prisoner with no forseen chances of any wrongdoing.
Vader is anything but.
He has about as much chance as 260 Rem getting his shot on the Spacex

Has this useless SOB been tried on his meth fuelled, tracking bracelet, truck stealing, copper stealing, arrest. Or what about his tampering with the witness charges in the case that gave this pecker head so much notoriety?

Put Garland with this *****!

It's a free country. Anyone who walks across the border is welcome & if you cut someone's head off they give you a new name & set you free. It's the liberal way & I don't see it getting better soon. The people that set these people free are sure a piece of work!!!!!

What is curious about his case is that instead of doing two years at the max like most people with an indeterminate sentence, he went directly to Grande Cache which is a medium security.

I would put the probability of an appeal at nearly 100 percent

He will be out for that as well

Good chance at a new trial at least , but I suspect they will ask for dismissal with prejudice

Many of you are ranting about this being the fault of the Liberal government - it may be worth noting that the leave Mr. Vader has accessed through the court (his "bail") is based on the legislation passed by the past federal conservative government.

Eligible does not mean it will be granted.

Let him have it, publish a press release stating where and when we will be there. Let vigilante justice take over since he is so adamant that he does not get a police escort.

Once Albertastan becomes a nation, you should apply to be the attorney general. You seem to have it figured out. Not.

Then one could argue that the Liberals are just as guilty by not repealing the law.
