bowhunting from the ground?
I have a bow and i practice with it regularly and I really want to get into bowhunting. Is a tree stand necessary for bowhunting deer? I am terrified of heights so a tree is not an option.
thank you so much

Get a ground blind or make some natural blinds.

Spot-and-stalk mule deer, or invest in a good ground blind. I've never shot an animal from a treestand, having bowhunted for 24 years, and been successful each year for the past 21.
You'll find that taking any deer with a bow is an amazing experience.

I haven't sat in a stand for over 5 years. My success has dropped substantially, but I enjoy still hunting much more, than sitting in one spot all day! I'm also hunting different properties, and the deer populations are not as plentiful. I used to fill doe tags pretty well every year from my treestand, but they are no longer available in that zone. It's definitely not a necessity!! Ground blinds are also an excellent choice.

X2 I hate tree stands. They work very well, But a quick ground blind also works well, or when it's cold a pop up blind works great ,and you can use a heater in it too.

Ground hunting
i have a treestand in a good spot but tonight I wanted to try a different spot. So I brought some burlap and shovel with me. Found a good spot under a willow and dug a hole, flopped over the sod and put my foamy on top to sit on. Tied up the burlap to the willow bush and my shovel handle on the other end and I was ready to hunt. Total time, about 10 minutes. The hole I put my feet into and the sod is my seat, I've been doing this for years and it's a deadly way to hunt. I had a buck at about 18 yards and could have easily shot him....if I wasn't looking for his granddaddy.

Yeah, ground hunting with a bow doesn't provide the highest rate of return, but it sure is fun. Last night's buck is a 4x5.... [IMG] [/IMG]

A tree stand isn't necessary a ground blind will work too, as will still hunting. This year while rifle hunting I had four deer come to within under 20 yards of me and I think that I could've shot them had I had my bow with me. Of course drawing without getting detected is always the hardest part. Point is it can be done and lots do it successfully. Don't let not wanting to be in a tree stand prevent you from bow hunting.

I've only shot 3 deer out of a stand. The rest are from the ground, many times just sitting still in the tall grass. It's more difficult, but it can be done. Majority of those animals killed have been whitetail.

Para archer
I am a para archer and hunt from the ground. I just dress in camo and cover my chair with a camo burlap. Works great.

Punch in "bowhunting australia" or "bowhunting new Zealand" into YouTube.
Stalking is the main method used down this way, no hiding in trees!
Last week I stalked into bow range of 6 deer. Decided not to take them but it's good practice.

Bowhunting
Strange this topic came up again. I posted on the 22 of November and it was just a couple of days later that I shot a 6x5 white tail with my bow. Shot was about 25 yards and a short recovery. One thing with ground hunting is the blood trail is often spotty or nonexistent because there isn't a low exit wound like shooting from a height. Luckily for me he only went about 70'yards and it was a solid double lung shot.

I've yet to get anything with my bow from a stand. This is my first year bow hunting though. Got both my bull moose and whitetail buck from the ground. I was walking for the moose and sitting on a little tripod seat beside a tree for my buck. Play the wind and you'll be fine.
