Coyote hunting

I use a 223 rem. I was wondering what you guys use for a gun and also what you uses for bait or do you call like me.

I'm not sure if baiting for yotes is a accepted means of hunting them, or if its legal. I just bought a 223 a few weeks ago and can't wait to sight it in. Then for some yote hunting. I plan on simply sneaking up to coulee edges and shooting as they run uphill trying to escape. Calling has failed miserably where i've hunted. Lots of yotes around during deer season so i'm hopeful.

.243, I was told by the Wholesale sales rep that they make a sabotted 50 grain round for the 30.06 that moves at something like 4200 fps....I nodded and smiled. Does this really exist? and if so how do you get 4200 fps out of it? It is still a sabot and probably weighs several more grains when leaving the barrel. If they did exist that would be pretty sweet for yotes, no?

I am not sure the exact spects of velocity but it should be close to that. They may not be all that acurate but I have not trried them. I can get 4000fps out of my 22-250 but I shoot my 50gr bulletts at 3740fps. Fast enough for me

I use a 7-57 mauser w/ 145 gr bullets great gun for long flat shots. I go out to farmers fields and hunt (with permission) where they may have a dead pill from cattle. The yotes populate around them in big numbers but are very spooked so you need a long shooting gun.

They exist .........they're called 'excellerators'. Come in 30-06 & 30-30 cal. A .22 cal 50 gr. bullet in a .30 cal sabot. Don't know about the 4200fps tho'. Wholesale & Russels handle them.

7 mag with a 100gr hornady hollow point goin appx 4000 fps

I say it alot but you really do learn something new everyday. I shoot 7mm so that Hornady looks very interesting. I will look up ballistics on that.

Wow I feel undergunned I use mostly 204 ruger and I have just aded a 22 hornet.

only thing is those 40 grain round nose only come out of that barrel at about 2600 fps dony great for over 100 yards the 22 hornet is mostly a beaver and muskrat gun in my eyes

I think some of you should get of your a@$ and get out there and shoot a few coyotes instead of speculating on what caliber does what. The best caliber is strickly based on how you hunt. If I can call them into 25 yards I can knock them down with a .177 air gun at 1000 fps. If my standard shots are 300 yards then its my .220 Swift or .243 with bullets that won't damage the pelt.

If you guys want to knock yourselfs out bantering a redundant useless question, by all means continue.

That is one powerfull pellet gun you got there,, where did you get it.. My old .177 coud'nt kill a grouse at that distance...

Most air guns you will see in stores (i.e. WalMart, C-Tire) shoot at under 500 fps. Over 500 fps the gun must be registered just as any other long gun. There are many makes and models, including a Daisy that will push a pellet at 1000 fps. Check out the Cabellas catalogue for a start.

.17 caliber pellet gun will still not harvest most coyotes at any range. I always laugh when people talk about how there pellet guns will kill bigger game. Rabbit at the largest. Even if you shoot a coyote in the head, the chances of the tiny pellet of penetrating bone are poor, and theres not enough energy to do much damage. I've shot them out plinking cans before and the pellets don't even go through a 1/4'' plywood. I watched a coyote take a 22 round to the head before and not die very quickly. Thats kind of like hunting gophers with a super soaker.

Super soakers work pretty well if they're loaded with 91 octane and the gopher is smoking :smokin
I'm still trying to figure out how to hook up a butane lighter to my SS...the big plus is they're nice and crispy and ready to eat :lol

Tamid, what type of bullets do you use for your 243? I just picked up a 243 win70 compact and was thinking of using it on some yotes this winter and maybe a wolf if I see one. Are they available in a factory load since I don't reload?

i got a .25 cal webley patriot and i will go through 3/4'" plywood and clean through a 5 lb block of hambuger at 80 yards dont know many coyotes that can stop that try going to air guns of arizona web page they have a wide selection of powerful air guns up to 9mm pre charged and have 250ftlbs of muzzle energy pretty powerful have a good one......
