Great pic! I’m sure you had a blast! What part of the province did you guys hunt? I was scouting east of Edmonton and had seen not a single bird...

Great opening day, I hate that I am stuck at work and not shooting ducks.

Default Opening Morning Success

The high winds had us worried but ended up being a blessing. Managed to get our goose limit in less then 15 mins with one mallard as a bonus. Looking forward to this weekend and hoping for a repeat performance. The kids had a blast... and so did dad

And so it begins, been scouting 3 times this wk for the kids to get out this weekend for the Waterfowl Heritage Days, slim pickins around here except for ducks. Think we have a field with decent numbers now. Did see a krapload of ducks though, one bunch was 20-30,000 on one roost. We were looking closer to Calgary to avoid the logistics issues and just do day hunts. No shortage of honkers around, just not flocking up yet in most areas. Watched a field last nite that I was thrilled to see 60+ birds on, lots of 10's & 20's around.. Sidekick found one with 200+ though, much better investment.

I have been out the past two days scouting, and I am not seeing a lot of geese and even fewer ducks. I only found two harvested pea fields and one swathed barley field, and only the barley field had enough geese to even have me even considering a hunt. Hopefully the farmers are able to harvest the pea crops soon, and more birds move into our area. Most of what I am seeing are Canadas, but a few specs are showing up.

I went scouting east of the city today again and we saw tons of ducks! They are everywhere, in every single slew! We were trying to find geese and were able to locate a few fields with them but no more that 30-50 birds. Lots of our regular go to places now have canola growing.... But we were able to find quite a few combined peas fields, especially along hway 16. Heading back tomorrow for more scouting and to knock at few doors...

We were north west of you and found some honkers.

Opening day 40 honkers and six mallards, five guys.
Yesterday different field 17 honkers and 20 mallards three guys.
We should have had more honkers yesterday but the wind died.

Everywhere I've been in the last wk, the peas are off, few bales on some fields still. They had peas off up towards Hanna last wk, barley as well. Lots of barley coming off now, even swathing canola. So far, so good. Took two kids out this AM, had a field of 400+ honkers. They made like specks and decided to change areas onto the SE part of the section, we were on the NW. 99% didn't even look at us, they just followed the other birds. Met up with another fella there, two more kids added in. They got to shoot twice, got one bird. My dog didn't even get a retrieve this AM. There was one lone eaglehead in there with the honkers last nite apparently, didn't see or hear any specks, that was SE of Cgy.

I finally found a field with 250 geese feeding on swathed barley, so we had our first hunt this morning. The geese had been in the field by 7:30 for the last two days, but today we only had a few small groups show up, and despite almost calm conditions, twisting around and shooting almost directly behind the layouts for some, and one shotgun that refused to fire most of the time, we managed to shoot eleven. Then at 8:30 over 200 geese finally left the roost, but they went directly to the other end of the field and dropped in 500 yards away. The big positive, is that several more fields have been swathed or combined, so next week should offer more options.

I grew up hunting ducks and geese with a few buddy’s in the estuaries north of Campbell River on the Island, but a good hunt was when we came back with enough birds that each of us could have a meal with our families...lol. Bird hunting around Fort McMurray is pretty much the same from what I’ve seen.

You guys are pretty lucky and I must say I’m a bit envious...

Thanks for posting Pics of the spoils of your shoot.

I’ve got a smoker of a shoot lined up for morning and another for Tuesday. Tomorrow will be the first foray that my Son makes into hunting. I’M SO EXCITED. A friend and his two boys will be joining us as well. 650+ Canada’s. 250-300 Specks and I really don’t know how many ducks - lots. It’s been building for 5 days. Shallow, grassy drainage to tuck in the blinds. Decent wind in the forecast. It’s a double limit shoot and I don’t even care if I touch off a round. Calling for and watching the kids will be satisfaction enough.

Man you guys got the birds there.

Nothing down here till usually late sept-early Oct.

I’m pondering doing a lakeside shoot at Keho tomorrow.....

But there’s them elk too...... and then blue grouse have evaded us twice this season....

Astenpanuk..!

I got old photos of my girls in the goose patch just like that!! What great memories.

Quick limits this morning, we just finished packing up when the rain started. The geese kept coming , even as were taking down our setup and packing up.

We just stick a few silhouettes around the blind. We use shells and full bodies for our spread.
