Default Pistol caliber carbines

Who’s got what carbine and In what caliber?

Anyone use theirs for hunting?

I have 2 Rossi 92’s. Both in 357 /38

Thinking it would be a great still hunting rig with 20” barrel and open sights in the poplar woods looking for deer inside of 75 yards.

Any experiences?

Calibers 40 & bigger open holes about the size your typical fully expanded small-bore rifle calibers do (without opening at all!) and typically out penetrate them on heavy resistance medias too ... but, do become strapped for real usable range because of their lower velocities compared to anything else. I'd suppose that's why they're overlooked for hunting as often as they are...

I've got Henry's myself and I really like them. Think as a ranch-hand in the bale truck all winter, or as a tracking gun, treestand gun or even a defense-outfit (loaded right) these 16-20" lever guns hold their own pretty good.

I haven't hung any tag-necessary animals with mine yet, but I'll tell you they do work good on cows & bulls when they have to. Many don't believe it, but heavy 250+ grain lead at modest pistol speeds actually out penetrates most common rifles (at any speed) through a cows or bulls thick skin & heavy muscle... seen it time & time again with my own eyes. So I wouldn't say there's any reason at all not to use them on big game so long as you keep the "range" inside that 75 yard number you mention and place your shots correctly. Break shoulders or lung about anything and it ain't going far.

Sharpsticks 'n string fill oodles of tags every season all over the country. Pistol-cal carbine would do at least as good if they were more widely acknowledged for it and applied to the task correct. Afterall, in old times, they damn near wiped out the buffalo with 40-cal lead doing something in the ballpark of 1100fps.. nobody (then) had Lapua's, Win Mag or BMG's!!! That right-there is sumthin to think about in itself.

Default .357

Has no problem out to 100 yards or so on WT and MD. A buddy shot one with a Armini revolver carbine at 75 yards and it was a bangflop 19" penetration frontal chest facing with a 158gr JHP.

I also have a Rossi, but in 44 mag and a 16" barrel. Kind of want to try it on deer, but I'm not proficient with the sights on it.

I've got a Ruger 77/44 in 44Mag. I've only been fortunate to harvest 1 antlered Whitetail with it, but worked extremely well. I limit myself to 75yard with this rifle so it is primarily a bush gun for me. I shoot 265gn Interlocks and would not hesitate to shoot elk or moose with this setup.

My Rossi 92 in 357 is likely what I will be using to kill my mule doe this year. Called in to within 50 yards with a 158gr powder coated lead Bullet. it should work great!.

I have a ranch hand short barrel. with fire sights. So much easier for quick shot placement than the original buckhorn
If e red dot won’t work then I’m getting another set of fire sights for my 20” carbine too.

I only hunt paper and reactive targets but i am impressed with premium 9mm rounds. Night and day performance from pistol to carbine.

I have a single shot brake action 9mm that shoot well out to 100 on targets but never shot anything but maybe a few gophers with it. Fun things to use though.

A 9mm carbine would be very economical to shoot.

The 38special is decent in price but not as good a deal as 9mm

357 and 44 mag and even 45LC really come to life in a carbine barrel.

Does a 9mm gain much speed in a longer barrel?

Default 9mm

Almost 200fps. Really shows with hollow points. That little bit more is over the line. Plus the accuracy...

In my 9mm single shot with a 25 inch barrel i shoot only the heavier bullets so far and get the same as mentioned above about 200 fps from a handgun. but it really varies on the make and if hollow point or not.

For sure the longer sight picture will greatly increase accuracy.

I don’t have a revolver but I have the mares leg and 20” carbine. I might set up the chrony and see what I get from a few different ammo options

I do not have a chrono but am happy to meet at spfga and test it out. G34, sub2k, and ruger pcc with several types of ammo and available to compare.

I’m up in MCMURRAY so that won’t work. But if you ever get in front of a chrony adding numbers on here for general info would be great.

I can accurately hit a milk jug at 100 with my Kel Tec Sub200 in 9mm
I’d really like to give the new 40 sub a try if I could get my hands on one.

I have a miroku 24 inch .357 I got rusty wood to get the trigger to just under 3 pounds fast turnaround and good job. Cast bullets puked lead all down the bore I use plated now. It’s accurate enough to 100 meters if I keep the loads up to near full power. I also have a miroku 44 40 which i shoot cast .429 no lead 427 was leading. It’s pretty accurate to 100 metres even though I only load it to about 1050 with tinstar and it’s different sight notches at 40 75 and 100. They are both 1873

I carried the 357 carbine in Saturday. Hoping to still hunt into a buck. Saw deer but always Past 100 yards. It was my last day I had so I put the carbine away and picked up the 270. Did the same route and of course a buck comes out at 80 yards. Would have been perfect. I ended up taking the little meat buck with the 270. If only I had more patience. I would have had a field report on the 357...
Maybe next year.

A 9mm carbine would be very economical to shoot.

Buddy has a Ruger. Hell of an expensive way to shoot gophers and the range to justify it isn't there.

well its cheaper to shoot than 17hmr so i dont see why it cant be a gopher gun.
