Default 50/hr welding

I'm going to get a new frame welded for my little boler, I found a welder to put one together for me, he charges $50.00 an hour and this is in his garage at home after hours.
Is this a normal price for them to charge?

It's about $60 below a normal shop charge. I'd say go with it.

A welder with rig usually bills out from $100 / hour and up.

If he is a decent welder that is a price you better jump on quick.

No, that is a discount rate! Just make sure he is qualified to weld a trailer frame... Is it being built from scratch? Big liability with that. I would keep a close eye on details... What process is being used? I'm guessing 'MIG'?

Just FYI, I used to be a welding instructor, but haven't welded for a few years. Doing QC now, but I still know a few things... If you have questions, feel free to pm me.

Make sure he is cwb certified, and his wcb insurance is up to date. And should also have liability coverage. My guess is at $50 an hour you won't find any of them. I could be wrong.

I have a friend with a Boler wanting to do the same once he builds his garage. Tired of the light duty frame cracking.

there's no liability like there's no paper trail. the guy gets cash doesn't pay tax fo he's 30% cheaper off the bat.

on top of that he has no insurance because he doesn't need it. he'll just bail and claim he didn't weld anything. could you prove he did? no, because you don't have a paper trail.

if he gets hurt he can sue you as he is employed by you and without wcb you're in trouble.

so discount welding is fun but watch out

I think there's some pretty serious regulations in Canada about welding a vehicle frame for anything that will be on public highways. You might want to check with a shop certified to do it.

I doubt anything would go wrong if he's a decent welder but man the liability would scare the crap out of me. Insurance company too...

I wouldn't do it for less than a 100 bucks an hour with you supplying everything. It's a good price depending on the quality of the welding. Ask to see his cwb and journeyman certificate before he starts.

I would personally jump all over that deal then take it down to registries to access a new VIN sticker for it no problem.
Google up Alberta Assigned VIN number and proceed with getting it inspected and a new sticker for it

Yup. Built our own sled trailer. Guy comes to the house, inspects, stamps a couple of VIN numbers and away you go. No issues.

I thought $50/HR looked very low.

Could someone show me a written law that says someone who welds a trailer needs to be a CWB certified welder?

Default Cwb

CWB is just a cash grab that lets someone sleep easier at night. I have all position stick/FCAW/MCAW and used to have GMAW. Some people let it get to their heads that they are a super welder. I think it's a joke.

Anyone can weld there own trailer, our high school built one and sold it privately. It is up to the person hauling the trailer to ensure that it is road worthy. When they assign a vin, they don't really inspect it, the just through on a stamp and off you go.

Its a great normal price! Probably the cheapest you could ever find

That WAS your original question right?
