Just wondering what everyone thinks makes the best bait, and which lure works the best?

I'm thinking for coyotes? I found deer carcasses were the best early. Road killed deer don't seem to be quite as productive, probably because of the hide? I found the bait sites I put fox and coyote carcasses at have slowed right down. Maybe that was a mistake? Can't imagine a coyote passing up any kind of free meal. Currently seeking out bait from cattle farmers and what ever else I can gather.

Not any help from me SS , I've got two spots set up with scent /lure and have nothing to show for it ! The only thing I almost caught was a deer , the bad worked perfect ! Maybe someone else can offer some advice as using Forsyth LDC doesn't seem to be working !

I find baits can be very funny one day there are coyotes all over then they will quit and not return for weeks. I have used dead cow beaver pigs and everything else a coyote will eat. I have had baits sit for weeks never get touched and then all of a sudden get pounded and I have had them get hit hard and fast as soon as I put them in. if you are using whole cows or pigs one thing I find that works is to cut them open with an axe if they are froze this gives them a place to start eating. the most important thing is patience if they quit at a bait they will come back.

Beaver works great for yotes, cats, marten.

This year I have used muskrat, beaver, deer, moose, a whole cow/calf, beef trim, pork trim/parts and fish.....basically anything that I could find. Everything attracted the birds but without a doubt the deer and moose scraps attracted more coyotes into the bait site to eat than anything else. It would disappear as quickly as I put it out and I wish that I had more.

What the coyotes didn't seem too interested in was the fish and the pork trim/parts.

Last year, prior to getting my licence, I started a bait site. For 3 weeks the coyotes were coming into it and then I added several skinned coyote carcasses. They stopped coming and never returned. This year I discarded all of my carcasses in a separate location and nothing other than birds have touched them in over a month. I noticed some coyote tracks very close to the carcass pile so I put up a couple of snares and I caught 2 coyotes. Both were mange, sick and on their last legs.

The one thing that I want to try as both bait and lure is animal guts. Ever notice how fast the yotes find and clean up a gut pile?

Try out some chicken backs.
Cheap as hell and work real well In my experience. Especially with some Minnesota red lure nearby.

I still think natural coyote crossing are the best. I have one place it's a 1/2 mile from a hiway intersection and bit of bush on the north side of one hiway and a long row of tree and willows on the south about 100 yards wide. It's like this imaginary coyote crossing. Steady catches thru there. I talked with one of my snaring buddies about baiting. We both noticed as soon as we started baiting bushes we have never baited all of Nov and Dec the catches just stopped. With the new snow I noticed a lot of tracks going around and non going in. Maybe coyotes are a little more cautious if there's something new in the area. I snared the creeks and beaver dam crossing with fair amount of luck all of Nov. I found a new pinch point on the creek to snare last week and they quit it cold turkey.

I have been baiting for a while. One bait site great. Lots of activity pulled lots of yotes Out of there. I was using butchered deer and moose scraps. And hides deer and moose hides. I found that once the meat is gone the hides keep them coming back to chew on. I threw a road kill deer and they aren't touching it. I just hacked it open so the birds can pick at it. We will see what happens there. Another bait site went cold. For a couple of weeks. Now it started givinger put out 2 small road kill deer gone in less than a week. So gonna snare hard there. I have never used yotes carcasses I also remove any mangy ones and dispose in a different spot.

My bro started a bait site and 2 weeks nothing come in. Now the 3rd week they are hitting it hard. We had a road kill deer there as well.

Also colonies and pig farms usually have a dump pit. If the pig is sick and they medicate it the yotes won't touch it.

I see that too with road kill where sometimes they don't touch it for a week then clean right up.
Could be antifreeze or oil smell.

Five days ago I put fresh bait at all my spots except one. When I showed up at the one spot there was a dead cow there the farmer had put out for me. I decided to save the bait for that spot. It may have been a bad decision there is not much bait left there now and there isn't so much as a hair out of place on that cow. They would rather gnaw on bare bones deer carcasses than eat that cow.

You have to cut the animal open for the coyotes to start eating it guys. Especially if it is frozen. Cut into the guts and get some stink going and they will start to eat it.

The only thing they will avoid with a dead cow is if it was pumped full of medicine before it died ! We had a cow die after a C-section and lots of antibiotics, put it out and nothing touched it for. Almost a month !

I do agree with Nube that I ou have to cut hem open to give them a place to start ! Then they will go at it !!!

Ok I'll give that a try! Not be a smart ass but who guts their deer for them lol? I did think about cutting it open but I could smell it from a good distance already. Is this a chainsaw and rain gear affair or just a couple chops with an axe?

I don't know if it was medicated.

Edit- It's not rocket science, I'll just make a starter hole for them. My friend and I were laughing about busting out rain gear and a chainsaw.

Chainsaw is a bad idea. You probably end up getting oil and gas on the critter. Oil from the blade for sure

I used whatever I could get my hands on. Plenty of beef, pork, fish and lamb trim as well as wild meat scraps. As long as I had some kind of bait at my location I caught coyotes. I'm really suprised some of you guys are having so much trouble. My best catch was the result of 5 gallons of frozen walleye and whitefish scraps. Even when I didn't have bait at a location the large bones and rib cages kept them coming
