Default 6.8rem or 7.62x39 for deer

I'm looking at getting a robison arms xcr for deer hunting. Was wondering what would be better for deer 6.8 or 7.62x39?

The 6.8Rem would be more appropriate, but both are only suitable for relatively short ranges.

What range would you say it would be good out to. A long shot for me is 300 yards

I wouldn't push the 7.62x39 past 150 yards, and the 6.8 rem much past 200 yards myself. Other people might, but I wouldn't.

Nothing wrong with either round. You may get a bit more range with a 6.8, but ammo availability will be way better for the 7.62x39, and cheaper too.

6.8, my asi mini took a doe at 220 yrd no sweat, hornady 110 gr v-max do 2720 fps out of 21" barrel, 10 twist spec 1 chamber, I recently had it cut to 18.5" but haven't zeros or rechronied yet, that load really messes up coyotes, would love to call in some wolves with this rig, the rem ammos I tried were lots slower, can't remember but around 100 fps FYI, mine will do sub 2moa groups at 200 yards with 4x triangle reticle scope very routine and that was my goal for it, going to fixed 2.5x and setting up for straight fast close action, predator calling, bush deer etc.

I had the x39 XCR, nice package but rather heavy for packing... I diddent mind the weight but it is what it is...

To pick between the 2 I would say get the x39 and .223 kit NOT the 6.8... It's expensive and ammo availability is not the best... A .223 is excellent for predators and the x39 is Awsome on deer out to 200 or a bit further but gravity takes over past there...

I averaged 6" 200M groups with chek surplus... Hornady SST factory ammo was around 3-4" with the odd 2-3"... Still plenty good enough for deer.

If you handload there are a lot of bullets out there designed for use in the 6.8SPC. The 85gr Barnes and E-tip plus the 100 and 110gr Accubonds are great performers. Hornady also offers the 120gr SST in a factory load and I've seen that at Wholesale. The 6.8SPC and 7.62x39 are very close in energy, but the 6.8 will carry that energy farther.

I can't speak to the accuracy of the XCR, the 6.8 is an accurate round and is very easy to get it to shoot well.

Stinky, how is the Hornady ammo cycling in your Spec I chamber? It is a hot load designed for the Spec II chamber. Remington ammo is slower as it is loaded to Spec I specifications.

cycles fine, i have the asi adjustable gas block, i just screw in or out to get the rounds ejecting not so aggressively, funny i shot it today...must have gotten the itch from reading this post yesterday, chrony says average is now 2660 fps with the 110gr v-max in the 18.5" barrel at 17 degrees C, a loss of 60 fps as compared to the 21" barrel...mine liked this ammo along with the 115gr otm the best for accuracy, pretty much equal, i would call it a pretty safe 200 yard deer set up...i just ran the numbers with the new velocity for my set up and a 200 yard zero equals exactly 2.0" high at 100, which is what i set it up for, pretty solid point blank hold to 200 yards and likely if deer only then 3" high at 100 zero would probably get you pretty close to 250 yard point blank hold but likely work best 200-ish yards or under

Read a lot of bad stuff about the 308 XCR. accuracy is really poor most think it is due to the 1 screw barrel mounting system. This totally turned me away from the XCR. I just picked up a Springfield arms m1a should work out well

I chose mini platform for it's almost kalishnikov like reliability and ability to take abuse and neglect in crappy conditions myself, however, a simpler and more affordable route to big game legal autoloader would be a bar shortrac in .243...likely more accurate too....if money less an object and 308 desired then the fnar or keltec bull pup would be players, but smart money again I think would go to a regular bar shortrac in 243 or 308, like ING guy says "it's YOUR money"

I like my baby garand though, sure is fun to shoot, cost too much to buy/import so I wouldn't do it again, glad it's here, but a redo likely see me doing a bar

some pics of my asi mini 6.8 in its current state, 18.5", .750" diam barrel, 10 twist spec 1 chamber, choate stock bedded by Henry Rempel, leupold low rings and leupold ultralight 2.5x scope...i included pics with and without the guard as i'm unsure i like it as really went for a 'sporting' look and another of the main reasons i chose this platform as you could get a pretty sporting look without the guards and showing the heavier custom barrel, however i'm 50/50 in its current set up, the guard seems to work on it, asi customizes the guard like that fyi when they do these rifles up, anyhow, its another option, just don't be in a rush to get one lol, the importing of rifles is a pia imo, you'd need at least 2k to pry that puppy out of my hands and i might consider when in the right mood which i usually get at least twice a year, but if i did the math the price might climb to kill any chance of a sale

guard or no guard?

That's a fine looking rifle. The 6.8spc is a very capable cartridge. I can't remember all the details, but it was devised by SOCOM and Remington. I would like to find one myself. For those interested, you can google it. There is alot of info. It is a nice hunting cartridge IMO, with plenty of velocity, energy and range to as far as most should be shooting at game.

Oh and I forgot to mention that it was indeed designed for use in short barreled platforms. Handy, light, and low recoil. Very suitable for youths and anyone else for that matter.

Hi Stinky Coyote. If you find the time, would you please PM me with details about your rig? I like it alot and would love a 6.8spc. What other options did you consider? I thought Ruger built one; the Hawk Eye, but can't find one. I would appreciate any info and/or assistance. Thank You! score..
