Just wanted peoples opinions on which has a higher catch ratio.

foot traps.
if you only had one trap and one snare. over time you'ld catch more with the trap as the snare will be destroyed much sooner.
depending on the animal, people catch more with snares because they are ALOT cheaper. and any yahoo can hang one.
hard to snare muskrats.

i figured that. it would be a very interesting challenge. a savvy trapper against a savvy snareman. equal amount of gear and weather conditions.
the trapper would catch more, for no other reason than being able to reuse the traps.IMO
it certainly pays to be able to use both.

Obviously that's why there's a higher rate with snares because every yahoo can hang one. Tough to catch a catch with a frozen trap or with a crow in the trap

there are ways to avoid that. but then a person wouldn't be a yahoo.
the biggest disadvantage to foot traps currently, is the check times. its very difficult to run a bunch of traps, and skin. for an extended period of time. talking about a 24hr check time for resident trapping.

My ratio when I trapped hard for coyotes was about 5% on good foothold sets and about 1-2% on snares, but I would set 30-50 footholds and 200+ snares due to economics and check times. Snares were way more effective due to sheer numbers and legholds are great for targeting a very specific animal or location, plus my own experience was I can set a coyote set (leghold) and get fox pretty readily, my snares are pretty species specific.

depends on how deep the snow is, and if its freeze/thaw.
not knowing, crumpled wax paper. under and over, and under the free jaw. with 2 4" spikes to keep it from rocking. is the basic way. but theres other ways aswell.
ice,,,,,,,,,,can't help. wouldn't set direct on ice, but theres probably a way. probably could do the same thing.

I use mainly snares. $ value on snares compared to traps. Snares win for me. Had a coyote an snare stole this season, not a big loss other than the coyote. If it had been a trap would of cost way more. Snares usually kill where a trap for coyotes don't.
This yahoo checks his snares every day so the time thing isn't a factor
