Default Easy Method

Get some .300 Win Mag range brass or new.Lube inside of neck with q-tip and up the shoulder to the height of the .308NM shoulder. This prevents oil dents................Then FL size and trim .Easy as heck.....the 7mag brass will work but end up short not that that matters for function.........Harold

Probably easier to neck down than expand up, as well. I like my shells to fill the chamber. No need to worry about scorching same.

P&D had some last week.

Not meaning to highjack the thread, but how can you remove dents in the shoulder from lube past? Will they cause problems if I use those cases to reload?

300win and 338win brass can be used to form 308norma

if you can find some case dry lube, I find that it works a touch better.

Unless you really wanted to use the Norma Brass with the stamped 308norma, I really wouldn't be to worried.

For some reason, a lot of people seeem to think that 338 makes a great parent case to neck to 308 Norma. It does not. The resultant case is about .060" too short. If this doesn't matter to you, then I guess that's fine. I also often hear or see the statement that the 30/338 and the 308 Norma are essentially the same. They are not.
300 Winchester magnum brass makes good 308 Norma brass. Remington 7mm Weatherby brass is also pretty good. Leeper

Default here's how

If you remove the expander button and de-capping rod first.Lube and FL size the .300 win mag brass re-assemble dies and FL size again this time the necks as well.No oil dents just trim and use....Harold.....PS..only lube the .300 case to where the .308 NM shoulder should be on first pass.

Default 338 to 308 Norma

Gibbs cartridges are made by expanding necks one or two calibers larger, then ran into Gibbs sizer only deep enough to allow bolt to close with slight resistance on an empty chambered case. It will headspace on the expanded neck allowing shoulder to move forward in chamber. These should be made with new brass only.

If the same care is taken with 338 Win Mag brass sized to 308 Norma Mag results will be fine. As for the 0.060" that will generate into a slightly shorter neck, about the thickness of a nickel and that is less than the overall length variance in 100 pieces of new Winchester brass.

Shooting a standard cartridge in an improved chamber shortens the neck of the cartridge. I have made hundreds of 308 Norma cases out of 338 with out incident. I load for 270 and 30 Gibbs, 223AI, 243AI, 250AI, 25-06AI, 6.5-06AI, 375 Mashburn, and 35/416 Rigby and a 375 Norma Magnum.

I don't see a problem with 338 Win Mag to 308 Norma. Just make sure you can feel slight bolt resistance on empty chambered brass.

You don't need slight resistance on the brass to maintain headspace since you have a belt. It is, however, SOP to headspace belted cases on the shoulder when reloading so there is nothing wrong with the advice. As I said, if having case necks which are 1/16" too short doesn't bother you, then you are good to go. There is no safety issue whatsoever. I certainly have not seen that much variation in a hundred pieces of Winchester or any other brass. Of course, if you like a shorter neck, you can just re-chamber the Norma to a 300 Win Mag and you will have one! I just don't see the point in forming a case from brass which is too short when brass of a suitable length is readily available. By the way I tried necking down 338 to form 308 Norma in 1965 when I was fifteen years old. I didn't like the result then and I don't like it any better now.
It is instructional to look, with a borescope, at the erosion created at the front of the chamber by using cases which are too short. It makes a difference. Leeper
