Default 357mag VS 44 mag

Hello all. Looking for a little advise. Going to buy a new gun for hunting cougar with this year. have packed a 30/30 for years and it works great, but lever actions dont really like being wet and frozen 4 mounths a year, plus it was grampa's and its time to clean it up and put it away.
Anyways desided on the Ruger m77 but dont know enough about these rounds to pick between the two.
All shots will be under 100 yards most will be under 50. also may need to shoot a deer with it seeing as the seasons over lap.
Any input would be great. thanks.
Dave.

44 mag offers more punch.

.357mag's cheaper and at least where I'm at easier to find. Personally I'd go for a .357 but I got a thing for that round!

We're talking rifle here? This sounds like just the ticket, if you can find one.

I used a 357 mag 1894 c marlin lever action to sucessfully take a 400 lb black bear this year. I used 180 grain federal bullets. I appreciate that you like the ruger m77 but with a lever you carry 10 bullets in the magazine. The 357 has very little kick and is a fun gun to pack around.

I have a Marlin 1894 in 357mag. If I was to hunt cougar again, that is what I would be carrying. 50 yard groups average under 2", with 100 yard groups around 4".
