Of course I len out my trucks, from tandems to 1/4 tons. I also borrow tractors, combines, swathers and such. Seems there are more than a few on here think they are the only ones with anything.

That said,
I stand firm on my motto:

"Never a Borrower nor lender be"

If i don't have something i need for a project, it is my problem
& not someones else's burden to provide for me or will be 'displeased'...

curious pitw,
how do you show your appreciation/compensate those letting you
borrow all that expensive heavy duty equipment?

i would offer to help out (i drive) , done that lots. done and do that with my friends, neighbours and daughters boyfriend (for his charity rodeo, moves etc).

one day boyfriend asked to borrow my truck, i told him i would be glad to assist him, and because keenly i take note on how he drives and maintains his own vehicle (pot holes, 90 etc) that he should never dare to ask me that again!

Default Depends on the nieghbour

My nieghbours beside me are really great. Like one member said, the kind I give a spare key too and can trust to come let my dogs out or feed them if needed. But thats only 2 people out of many near by. I have known them over the years and if they asked me to use my truck id have no problem with it. I even offered their boy to teach him how to drive standard in it. If some other nieghbour I never talked too asked, It would be a "no sorry". Especially, some entitled idiot it sounds like that guy was. He seems like the kind of person that definitely wouldn't appreciate your generosity as well.

It would be interesting to know how many of the absolutely nots in this thread go searching for permission to hunt on private land.

Unless I know the owner or am introduced to the owner I do not seek permission on private land.

I no longer own a truck but have people phoning asking for assistance.

I think it would be a better comparison to asking to borrow a farmer's tractor than a neighbour's truck.

I often help out people often with hauling things, but it's my insurance on the line, so I do the driving.

Why? Is a truck not the most precious thing some of these guys own? Putting that in type sure made me open my eyes. Scary thought.

I can't imagine why. Wanting to use something that someone else owns...very straight across comparison.

So, do you guys lend out your truck? Interested in hearing both sides.

Your question is a derail, which means nothing in the world of Alberta Outdoor, and I am not innocent in the derail department, maybe start a conversation on a new thread regarding your question?

I have already answered the original post and yours.

Generally no. I'll let my dad borrow it, and maybe some close friends, but that's about it.

That said, I'd probably lend my truck out to a stranger before I lent out a trailer. Heard countless trailer borrowing horror stories.

I don't mind lending my truck to people I am close to or trust. It hasn't bit me yet, but I am selective on who would.

A guy that lives on my street and I'm not buddies with? No.

Default The last time I let somebody "borrow" my truck.....

He was supposed to have been back in 10 minutes......30 minutes later I went looking for my truck(1985 Toyota Turbo Deisel) and after a 10 minute walk I find my truck held hostage because the guy is going through a nasty shout out arguement between him and his nutcase girlfriend who was throwinh is clothes out the window. He started to talk and I said "Gimme my fricken keys as I dont want to be involved".....I got my keys and drove off in my truck.

I will never let anyone borrow my vehicle again.

The problem with most people who don't have a truck is that they think it is bullet proof and meant to be abused, so dragging stuff over the box is a no brainer to them... I would rather volunteer to help unless it is someone who I trust who also has owned a truck

Actually it should have read " a farmer's tractor AND a neighbor's truck" in response to the comparison of wanting access to land and borrowing a truck.

I love this neighborhood.

We have keys to two of our neighbors homes, they watch our pets, we watch theirs. They lend, we lend. It's called community spirit.
We have other neighbors that live further and they are the same with those close to them.

I have no doubt about my neighbors. I'd lend them anything that doesn't breathe. I have no doubt they would do the same.

I ask permission to hunt, to pick berries, to look for mushrooms. I have never been turned down and don't expect I ever will be. We are neighbors.

We don't ask because we don't know if we are welcome or not, we ask because it's the right thing to do. We ask because it respects their property and their person.

I have a boat, I know people who don't, I invite them to go fishing with me.
I'd loan them my boat, if they had a rig that could pull it.

I show my neighbors where I fish and how I catch fish, I show them where I hunt and how to hunt. They can borrow my guns or decoys any time they ask.

We are neighbors. That's what neighbors do.

Folks from outside come here to hunt and fish and they demand we treat them like neighbors. Neighbors don't demand, they ask, and they are okay with whatever answer they get.

Demanding is not neighborly. Sneaking in when no one is watching is not neighborly. Lying is not neighborly. Blocking roads so no one else can hunt is not neighborly. Parking on the boat launch is not neighborly.

People have forgot how to be good neighbors. They are losers in the real sense of the word.
They will never know what it means to know that your neighbor has your back.

That's sad. Good neighbors are a blessing, and that blessing has to have two sides to it. One can not be a good neighbor to someone who takes and never gives.

As I sit here, waiting for little brother to pick me up, we are moving his truck to a neighbors today. I hear gunshots over across the road.
I know it is my neighbors target practicing.

I am not concerned. The police will not be called. I know they are aware of our house and they will never deliberately shoot this direction.
I know if a stray bullet does come this way, it was an accident.

Neighbors don't call the police, there is no need to. Neighbors work it out among themselves. And the community grows stronger because of it.

It's good to have good neighbors, it's even better to be a good neighbor.

Not so much.
I too sit squarely in the 'neither a borrow or a lender be' camp.
Wasn't always this way, but one instance changed my thinking. A fellow photographer had asked to borrow a lens of mine...a quite expensive perspective control lens. Brought it back a couple of days later and said 'thanks'.
His assistant (who was an actual friend of mine) phoned me later that day and told me his 'boss' had dropped the lens in water, had thoroughly rinsed it and then dried it off so visually it looked fine. I sent the lens in and there was indeed corrosion on some of the interior mechanism that cost near $400 to deal with.
When I presented the bill to the photographer he whined that 'yes, I did get it wet but there is no way he caused all that damage'.
Since that day the only people I will lend stuff too are family and one or two long term (as in 20+ year) friends.

It probably helps that it's a little S-10 with an 8" lift & 35" tires and isn't good for hauling much more than tools or my dirt bike. My pops lives 5 min away and has a 2500 dirtymax I can use anytime for the real work
