Oil Rigs...
My friends dad is in Alberta right now and told his son he can get us some jobs as machine operators. Told us it's around 42/hr..my question is how much is the training and how would the job be.
Lastly are the Rigs busy right now?

You may be SOL. Alberta works as such.
42$ for albertans
Bc and sask 36
Further east keeps going down.
Newfoundlanders and such will make about 18$

Take it easy guys.
I met a fellow a few years ago that had just arrived and was told the streets in Alberta were paved with gold. As we walked, he stepped right over a $20 bill laying on the sidewalk. When I asked him why he passed it by, he said "I don't want to work my first day here!"
To the OP, I think your expectations may be a bit optimistic. It would be best to get some more info from your original source and maybe we can help after that.

There's no way when you first go up your making 42$hr that's Forman rate first year maybe 26$ hr if your lucky to start and it's a good company. Wages go up from there depending how hard you show you can work.

Would be hard to compete with Albertans. Many workers have 20 + years of experience at oil field .But young should start .In 4 years he will definitely could make those money.
Good luck!

If by machinery you mean shovels there is plenty available. Cut your expectations in half and you're about there. Which still leaves you better off than where you are (I am assuming).
Come out, persevere, you will do well.

depends who you work for and what you have for experience.
42$ is an experienced hoe, dozer or graderman working a union gig.
Most companys are about 22-38$$ range.
Alot of Alberta like anywhere else is who you know which will affect what you can make or what equipment you get on.
Alberta is a good place to operate, if you can get a machine in gear and do something that appears to be constructive you will stay employed . hahaha. I used to build roads and I have seen absolutely horrible operators survive here because there is a major shortage of people into it these days.
If you work a shift out of town you can make an easy 100+k running equipment.

Im only really asking because this opportunity came up for us months ago but we didnt act on it...
Im not going there with expectations for 40..the starting wage is more than enough and substantial amount more than what i can make here. Anyways thanks for the responses.
how is it in alberta right now? is it busy or slow at the rigs? Right now my friend is just trying to contact his dad even if that link doesnt work out Im still planning on heading out there.

Alright guess you guys were right.
It was a totally different story when we told his dad we were ready to work as hes now sending us links to apply online. We have the option of just moving there right now as we have enough money saved up. But is it a good time right now to go apply to jobs in person or later in the summer?
Also will just applying online suffice.

Midsummer into fall Would be the best time but still done jobs around. Wet weather has things slow right now but it will start ramping up again in a month or so.

Never mind the No minds..Lot's of Work..Just not that kind of Money to Start..I guess it's better to be exposed to that kind of Negativity before you get here..Most Albertan's are Welcoming no matter where you are from but there are Azzhats who may possibly be Useless in real life and hold a little animosity towards those who wish to Leave Home and Family to make a decent living...Good Luck...

Well you just learnt an important lesson. Lots of people like to play big shot. Yeah I can get you a job, I'm pretty much the foreman here, I can get you way more money than you're making now. I've been told, and overheard lines like this for 15 years. Then once you buy your work boots, and bus ticket, all you hear is, "Jeez, we just slowed down, but I hear Flints hiring."
Take it slow, get a bottom of the barrel labouring job, til you get to take a look around, get your feet undernyou, and find something with a little direction to it.

If you want to be busy, have a schedule and have guaranteed days off get your class I and get on with a frac company (Trican, Sanjel, Schlumberger, Canyon etc), production testing and drilling rigs also good choices. I worked service rigs 20 years and have no regrets but it is a little more unpredictable, most of the completions now that used to have a service rig on the hole for 2 months are being done in a week with no service rig with todays technology. One thing about service rigs is you don't really need a vehicle, you don't have to drive to the rig, the driller picks you up.
