Default A Beginners List...

Hey guys.. As the title suggests.. I'm new to hunting.. And the last thing I want to do is start with any bad habits.. Basically I'm looking to get some suggestions for things you guys take with you.. Things you've learned NOT to forget.. What paper work do you bring.. That sort of thing..

Also the reason I'm doing this is for my dad.. He's a hunter and has been for years.. Well he's creeping up in age and I want to start doing things with him that he cares about and does.. Except being new to Alberta(BC originally) knowing places I can take him would be a little helpful to say the least... I guess what I'm asking for is a point in the right direction.. I've read some horror stories on here and the last thing I want to become is one of the bad stories on here now if I do something funny or embarrassing that's a good story.. We learn from those

A few things you should always have with you in your pocket is a compass, lighter/matches, and a knife. I always make sure I've got those with me even when I'm going into an area I know really well. It's pretty easy to get turned around when. And I'm from the school of thought that there is no such thing as too much ammunition. I always carry a little extra with me when I'm hunting. Hope this helps out.

x2 on a compass - but learn how to use the thing first.
Knife
A spare round for you and your partner in case you forget your mag or the main stash of amo.
Matches or lighter
Tags and certificates
small roll of survey tape (1001 uses for that stuff)

Socks 4 pair, Hands, feet, neck and balls socks will always cover them all! Also socks are way better then toilet paper cause you can wipe your azz with socks but you can't wear toilet paper.

Not survival related......but will come in very handy when/if you're successful. It's called the deer butt-out tool. I've used them a lot and they work very well.

hi coldone,
i think the thing is to have 'a lot of a little and a little of alot.' if that makes sense... film cannisters for anything waterproof, fingernail clippers, zip ties, small candles for starting a fire, granola bars. your delightful ensemble has to be small enough to be easy packing and yet not spend a crapload of money on if you loss it its not a big deal
if you have a gun that you dont care about. remove the buttplate and drill a hole in the wood, install couple rounds, then tightly pack some of those kevlar shoelaces (to make a emerg sling or whatever) . this stops the rattling.
reinstall the plate,
use a rock shaped rock to 'surgically' remove the buttplate should you need it

Kinky! That's not something you want to have on the front seat when you're on a date:

Girl: "Hey, what's that?"
Guy: "Ummm.... It's a lawn dart"
---------------

Survival wise, the best purchase I've made is the "Swiss Champ" swiss army knife. MEC carries them for $79. It's also my favorite home reno tool.

Sometimes they are also sold in a handy belt holder kit with extra compass, signal mirror, matches, comb, morse code sheet, needle and thread and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember...
