Went to get my propane tank refilled on the weekend as I wasn't close to a C.Tire where I bought the tank last fall . I discovered the tank was expired and couldn't get it filled . I took it today to C.Tire to get an exchange and literally had to go through about 20 bottles to find one that was current!
I am thinking to myself . I can't get an expired tank refilled but apparently it's not really an issue for the tank rental outfits who it would appear have no problem with refilling their own expired tanks. I always thought the old "expired Propane tank " was a bit of a racket .I believe I was right.
Obviously not for corroded or questionable tanks, more suggesting towards those seldom-used tanks that might have only seen 4 fills before the expiration date kicked in.
I believe exchange tanks are good for 20 years
I had one here and the St. Paul co-op would not refill it.
on the plastic wrap on the bottle it says 20 years. but only if exchanged
Exchange tanks are a very shady business. Around here it is near $30 for a 20 lb exchange and you can literally feel a difference in every tank so you need to go through them to find one that is actually full.
If you have one, go to Costco and get one of their tanks (they are really good) and get them to fill them. Last time it was around $7 for a 20 lb fill IIRC and they only charge for actual weight filled so you can bring in partial tanks and only pay for what you get.

Exchange tanks are a complete ripp-off.
Costco fills two empty 20 pound tanks for 13.00 tax included. 6.48 and 6.50 each tank. And when they fill them they fill them full. Not like the exchange tanks.
