Midsized truck

Just curios if anyone else has been in the market or purchased a midsize truck (1/4 ton). I'm looking at downsizing from the half ton to a quarter ton, I took the Tacoma and Canyon both for a test drive last night. Wow, the Tacoma has not done a damn thing for at least 5 years as a buddy has a 5 year old tacoma and they look identical inside minus the new touch screens. Just curious if anyone is in the same position I'm in and what sort of things they are considering or if anyone has purchased a new canyon or tacoma recently, and their thoughts on the vehicle they bought.

Everyone I know seems to be buying, planning to buy, or dreaming about a Taco. I don't get it. I've seen the resale market for these things and it makes the guys on the AO Buy and Sell look like Goodwill.

Used to have a Ranger, loved it.

These days the price of a 1/4 ton,
You'd be better just to get a 1/2

I don't understand getting these smaller trucks, one guy I worked with got a new Tacoma, I got a new full sized GMC with as many options and 4 full sized doors for $10,000 less and get better mileage. He was all proud of his fancy little storage compartments under the rear seats, you could put a full sized thermos and a couple sandwiches in there, I can throw dinner for six under my rear seats plus a portable barbeque. If people want to pay the same or more for less be my guest.

I bought a Ranger, but after two years, I went back to a regular half ton. The fuel mileage savings was small, but the difference in room both in the cab and for hauling was huge. I don't see myself ever owning another small pickup.

I owned a ranger for a year and it was ok. Great if you wanted to wedge it into parking stalls but being an extended cab and a small truck I found that there just wasn't enough room for my hunting stuff. That and the box was very small so I switched back to a half ton and have never looked back.

If I were looking for a mid size truck I would consider the diesel canyon:

Right now you really have only gm or Toyota to choose from, next year Ford is supposed to bring back the Ranger. I'm looking right now for the same. I agree with the half ton if you have the room. I'm going to much smaller place, so am going with the smaller truck. The Tacoma is much better finished inside then the gm. Gas motors are both similar, the gm has a little more pep, but the transmission is very sluggish tuned for mileage. The diesel isn't for me, but a nice alternative if you're towing, or maybe running mega miles. It's about 5k more.

Bose system sounds pretty darned good in the chev, haven't listened to the JBL in the Toyota. Width between wheel wells is 3" wider on the chev. Interior is a smidge bigger too. Chev seats are harder then the Toyota, but have a little better seating position. Toyota resale will likely squash any upfront savings.

Drive em both and get what you want. Oh yeah gm has a far better drivetrain warranty, but the Toyota likely doesn't need more

Chevy V6 is the same motor they run in the caddy and camaros I believe, which I'd say is a pretty proven motor.

Now if only toyota would bring the diesel hilux here..

It's a subjective thing. I personally am downsizing.. Don't want a 1/2 ton to drive around town. I'm gonna wait a few years til the diesel canyon is proven though.

My wife has a Ranger we bought new in April 2011. It just turned 40K. Great "little" truck, but too little. Won't do it again. She has wanted a full size half ton for a while now. Might even sell the Ranger soon.

Go full size half ton and you won't regret it. You won't save much in initial cost or fuel costs with a smaller truck.

Depending what your using it for, I use for checking oil and gas wells. I had a Colorado, it was smooth riding and comfortable but not tuff enough for oilfield use, to many sensors that fail. I have a Taco now, not as smooth but way tougher and simple to do my own maintenance.
