How do I kill my crabapple tree.

Cut down a crabapple tree about 6 years ago. Every year new ones shoot up just about anywhere in my yard, the last couple years they been coming up in the middle of my lilac bushes. They grow like weeds, how do I kill these things off for good, I see one's coming up in the neighbors yard now.

Go to the original tree stump and bore holes in and fill with round up , it will follow root base and kill it

6" of copper pipe driven into base sgould do the trick. Girdle dirt line with a hatchet.

X2. Better even if you drill holes into the trunk at a downward angle in late summer. Fill with round up and cut the tree down the next year

Roundup won't work, it needs chlorophyll to work which is in the leaves.

Drill holes, mix diesel fuel and 2-4D and pour into the holes.

It will if you drill holes all around and inject concentrated roundup with a syringe just as the leaves are opening. The roundup is transported to the leaves as the sap runs and the process takes over. It's how they kill poplars -- notorious for shoots.

I have used roundup like this before ,it will kill the tree and anything connected,concentrated roundup.

Hi Bushrat.

Sounds like you cut it down while it was dormant (leaves off).

After 6 years, there probably isn't much of a stump to deal with, unless of course it's still suckering like crazy off of it. If that is the case (as has been mentioned), drill a series of holes around the OUTER EDGE of the stump face several inches deep and apply your favourite none selective herbicide of choice repeatedly. (Please don't use diesel). This is step one.

Given the amount of time that has passed, the suckers have likely established fairly hardy and independent root systems of their own and could be fairly self -reliant.

Give it a couple weeks after the first application to the stump and see what happens. I'd personally cut all the suckers to ground level for the first season of treatment to see what happens prior to applying something like a Round up to the tougher ones.

The lesson here is that one does not want to cut down a tree that is dormant. The root system acts like a battery during the winter and stores all the energy the organism has produced during the growing months in order to fire it up again come spring. If there is no tree there, you'll end up with a wack of persistent little zombie off spring.

Actually it died of thirst one really dry summer, I cut it down the next spring when it didn't leaf out, my other apple trees survived fine, they weren't crabs thankfully.

Bleach poured in the wholes works great to, do it few times. Left mine for a season, was the easiest thing to remove.
