Default dumb question

Is a landowner in a rural situation allowed to set traps if on it if they have the trappers education course? I will be moving to a rural property in the next year and I have taken the course, but not in Alberta.
Just wondering about private property trapping regs? I dont mind allowing a local trapper on my future land lol...Just covering base here

I'm studying the Alberta Trappers Manual now and I intend to challenge the Resident Trappers test. If you have a Resident Trappers licence you can trap on your own land and/or privately owned land that you have permission to access but you can't trap on crown land. I don't know if your qualifications are transferable to Alberta but the Resident Trappers licence is what you want to trap your own land.

I'm sure if you held a trappers license in another province then you would be ok to get one here.

If you only did the course in another province then you might have to redo the test here. Shouldn't be much of a problem since most provinces have the same animals although regulations might differ.

As a resident trapper, you can trap animals on your own and other private land (with permission). Crown land is mainly trap lines and only registered trappers have the rights to the fur on them. There are bits and pieces of crown land around that do not belong to a trapline and can be trapped by resident trappers who have permission from the F&W.

As an aside, resident trappers are not allowed to trap certain species such as fisher, lynx, wolverine, and marten (in some areas).

Hope this helps

That wasn't a dumb question. I didn't know there was a residential trappers course. Where and how much is it. I need someone to come out and trap on my 5 quarters 40 West of Edmonton. Mainly for coyotes but if there are others great....

Not a dumb question. The laws involved are quiet complicated.

First, you don't need a license to set traps on your own land, you do need a license to trap some animals classed as fur bearing, even on your own land, and you do need a license to sell the pelts of those animals, trapped on your own land, or any other land.

If you have passed a trapping course anywhere in Canada, I am sure you are eligible to purchase a license in Alberta, if you wish to do so.

From the regulations;

Quote:
A “first‑time trapper” is a person who has:
1) never before held a licence in Alberta or elsewhere that
authorized the trapping of fur-bearing animals, or
2) not completed a fur management course.
A resident license is required to trap fur bearing animals on your own land or on any other privately owned land and some public land, to which you have right of access. (written permission.)

To show written permission you will need to have a properly filled out and signed WA 19A Form .
These forms are available for free from any F&W office.

It's easy enough to find out once and for all. All you have to do is go to any F&W office and request to purchase a resident trappers license, they will tell you if you are qualified or not.

Keep in mind, the licensing provisions apply only to fur bearing species.
They do not apply to pest species such as mice, Skunk, Red Squirrel, Beaver, and Raccoon.

A downloadable version of the trapping regulations is available at
http://mywildalberta.com/Trapping/Re...s/Default.aspx

Simply right click on the picture of the front page of the regulations pamphlet and choose, "save file".

The Alberta basic trappers course is based on the Canadian Trapping Standards set by the Fur Institue of Canada and the Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS). Every province has this standard so if a person has taken a course in another province and have documentation , you may not have to challenge the exam.

Actually, Canadian trapping standards are recognized and accepted around the globe for the high standards.

PM sent SDKiller. The Alberta Trappers Association is located in Barrhead. I contacted them about a course but there's nothing scheduled there as of now. The fella that answered my email (Jim) said that they'd like to conduct a course this winter. I just bought the 2013 Alberta Trappers manual there for $50 + gst and I plan on studying and challenging the F&W test.

OOPPPS!

My bad. You are right on both counts. I should have re-read my post before I added it to the thread.

Check with your trappers' local. Most of them offer a course at some point during the year.
