Default Sinking Line Help

I have a 6wt rod and I'm looking to do some lake fishing for walleye and bulltrout. Mostly from a boat but will wade occasionally. I want to cast clouser and cone head patterns.

I picked up a scientific shooting taper 6wt deep 4 4-7ips. Do I back with a running line or monofilament?

Not sure if I am going in the right direction. Please help. Budget is in mind I picked up the shooting taper line for 18 dollars.

Are you asking about backer for your fly line, if so use nylon, 20lb test, you could use mono, but will have memory, and you don't want that if you got a big fish running.

Ok. Wasn't sure if the shooting taper was the right direction. Distance casting is my goal.

Thats a pretty good setup for walleye, never fished lake bulls.
I use something similar for pike and walleye, airflo 40+ 7wt 7ips, sinks like lead and shoots well enough that even i can reach backing, coupled with 10' 8wt rod it works good on rivers as well.

You might find deer hair/foam head streamers more useful than coneheads, you wanna keep your hook off bottom.

knocksum,

Shooting tapers are designed to have a running line attached to them. The running line typically is 0.035" OD and about 100' long. Several line companies sell them. If you add the running line to the cost of your purchase, you will exceed $70.
Shooting tapers are for distance casting and the weight of the line has to be tailored to the rod and casters ability. This line is very much a speciality line.
I used one for several years for casting streamers on the Bow.

Regards,

Don
