Default Calgary NW Entomological Update

Alright guys, I live 2 blocks from the river and we get aquatic insects on our screen door frequently. As well, I keep a pretty close eye on terrestrials as well.

I will attempt to update as often as I can with descriptions and the odd picture and promise to keep it latin free (as much as possible).

2nd week of May:

10mm brown/olive dark winged mayflies

today there are hordes of 20mm gangly craneflies everywhere. mottled light brown

the last few weeks we have had 8-10mm narrow black stoneflies as well.

big mosquitoes are out

4mm midges and 8mm midges

several species of queen bumble bees are out searching for new nest sites

have seen a couple good swarms of bibionids aka lovebugs, basically a 12mm goofy looking midge

Yup doing a job down by the cottonwood golf coarse, grabbed my lunch and took a stroll over to the river. March browns (brown\olive mayflies) were coming off and some really nice fish were gobbling them up...bringing the gear tomorrow!!
