Default E bike White-tail

A do it yourself hunt on public land is becoming more doable on an e bike. This is my third year in some pretty remote country. Gets you in and out and where you need to be. Got this buck on opening weekend . Went in light and the two trips coming out were heavy. Now looking for a mule deer buck for the rest of the season. Hope to bring another deer out this way. I was by myself so my field photos aren’t the greatest.

That's awesome! How long does your bike hold a charge? Do you recharge it out in the field somehow?

Is the motorized bike considered a motorized vehicle?

No it's not.

Although some areas do specifically restrict ebikes so you do have to read and know where you can and cant go. Lots of kanaskis is off limits to ebikes on the provincial website. I am sure if my mom and dad were out on them no one would bat an eye, toss a rifle on it and everyone would phone you in.

I should have said electric ASSIST ebikes are not.

Some "ebikes" are throttle type, which is a motor and is a different beast all together.

The assist means you must be pedaling with power to move. It just helps you, doesnt take over, and still makes you work to go somewhere. You can still get a good sweat going, it's not a easy cop out like lots of people think.

I can go all day on this battery charge if I use it lightly on the lowest assist setting. I covered a lot of ground. I used horses in this particular as well. The e bike is more effective. Don’t need to tie off and can easily make myself ready to shoot. I can charge my battery when I get back to the truck with the Honda inverter generator.

Default an ebike is not a "motor vehicle" (caveat)

I'm thinking on getting an ebike and I've researched transportation AB and a few manufacturers.

For backcountry/offroad.... definitely need a fat tire ebike. An ebike (power bicycle) is not a "motor vehicle" provided that it does not exceed 500W (see link for further information).

Why do these kinds of threads turn into a million useless posts about the legalities of an item or action. I’m gonna give the OP the benefit of the doubt he did his homework.
Congrats on a great hunt. That’s a really neat way of getting it done. Go in light, come out heavy. Love it!

We hunted on mountain bikes this year and its really good. You can get back to your spot pretty quick and quietly.

This is brilliant, from my limited experience of hunting in Alberta, I can imagine such a perfect way to hunt, you can circumnavigate wet patches, get there quietly and in to places many people wouldn't be able to get to without a quad bike etc.

Have you noticed a lot more animals than your days driving round?

Be careful using an ebike on grazing leases as well, make sure you check that out. I know the sandstone in your area doesn't allow ebikes.

Very cool BBull ! Any recommendations on tires to counter those nasty cactus spikes?

I wouldn't be riding right over *****ly-pear patches, but there's often loose stuff littering the cattle trails.

For anyone interested, my e-bike gets about 60+ kms when on 'Sport' assist mode (the 2nd highest setting - I save the highest 'Turbo' for steep hills), carrying my fat arse over varied terrain on hard pack trail or pavement. On the least power assist mode, I can make 100+ km on a fully charged battery.

I imagine this would be more of a southern AB thing..where its flat I know John Dudley uses fat-bike to get to his hunt locations. I might try the mountain bike for bow hunting next year.

I have been using a fat bike in south Alberta 5 years now. You will have cactus problems almost every year. once the cactus are in the tires the tires are garbage as well as the tubes, if you don’t put new tires the cactus that remain will just blow your new tubes. I would like to try that green slime in a tubeless setup but I haven’t got there yet.

Very nice deer - congratulations.

I don't want to detract from your harvest but I have a hard time seeing the difference between that bike and a dirt bike. This e-bike thing feels like a loophole that probably ought to be closed (ie. areas where OHVs etc are not allowed, so should be the case for e-bikes). Again, if you were in an area where all OHV's were ok, all good. That said, if I had to leave my quad at home and saw a fella ride past me on one of those e-bikes while I was sweating up a hill, I'd be upset.

I'll close by saying that the bike didn't do the stalk for you, and didn't execute the shot, so again, congratulations on a well harvested deer.

There is a huge difference between an assisted ebike and a quad / dirt bike in potential range and impact on the landscape. You still have to pedal to make them work and the amount of payload you can can carry / haul is a lot less than a quad,,, and I can't see anyone on a e bike ripping up hillsides and stream beds just for fun like the quadders, dirt bikes and other ATV piston heads have been known to do!!!!

Congrats to the original poster on a well earned trophy whitetail!

As far as I’m concerned the e bike is keeping the rules of any foot access parcel or grazing lease. In order to get to where the deer live one must travel miles just to have an opportunity to look over river valleys etc. The term reasonable access needs to be evaluated. . . Is reasonable access walking 6 miles just to have a glimpse of the river? I would say it is not. Grazing lease holders have a lot of say on how the land is accessed. The e bike option is a type of compromise for the hunter if he or she is willing to do the work. I’ve been pretty discouraged over the years to have access restricted to my two feet walking long distances , just to turn around and spending hours waking back to the truck.
