Default Stock Truck Rims - Outrageous Price

So long story short, last summer I ended up with a flat on my Ram. Couldn't get the spare tire off (the dealership ended up cutting it off with a blow torch - stripped bolt was holding it on) so I ended up limping 32 km down a logging road to get to the highway just north of Quesnel BC. Had a tow truck pick me up and take me into town to get the repairs. I was told the rim barely survived but should be good. My Dealership ended up reimbursing me for the costs because they were the ones that stripped the bolt holding the spare in place.

Around two months ago, that rim / tire started leaking very slowly. It took around 2 weeks for the alarm to go off for low pressure after being filled. I thought it was just the tire and lived with it. two weeks ago I got new tires for the truck, and that same rim is still leaking. So today I went to the dealership to inquire about the costs of a new rim, My jaw hit the counter.... $639 for ONE RIM.

Do they have ANY idea on what kind of aftermarket rims I can buy for the cost of replacing all four!?!?!?!?

That being said, anyone have a rim for a 2013 Ram 1500 (Laramie 20" rim) for sale???? lol.....

I'm going to be having a chat with the dealership manager.

Kijiji is your friend..

I bought 4 ram 3500 rims in mint shape for $250 last year.

Default Ouch!

A bit of good news is that people commonly replace stock rims with aftermarket ones, so you might be able to find replacements on Kijiji or the like. Unfortunately, you might have to buy the set. (I did just that to mount winter tires on - cost less even than a set of stamped steel rims.)

Otherwise, I suggest contacting auto wreckers. Best of luck.

Edit: Beaten to the punch!

I even like to watch Kijiji for tires. I haven't bought a brand new set in 10 years. You can usually get take off rims and tires in the 500-1000 dollar range. I replaced a set on F350. Paid 800 for like new Harley 20" rims and wranglers...then sold 18" plain jane rims with worn out tires for $500.

Kijiji as said, takeoffs at a dealer, takeoffs at a tire shop, or a wrecker

Keep in touch with some dealers. Many new trucks have the factory rims replaced at time of purchase. I bought a set of black steel, original, take-offs (17" for a Tacoma) for $100 total.

My alloys were continually losing air and in an unpredictable fashion so decided to go with steel. Apparently the alloys start to corrode around the edges over time. Not sure if a good scraping/polishing will solve the problem so just have them sitting in my garage for now.

Aluminum is porous. Find where the pin hole leak is and weld the hole.

Factory rims are absurdly priced. Even what the dealerships pay for them is way too high. If I ever had an issue with an OEM rim I would replace them all with aftermarket right away and not even think twice. Anyone I know who replaced one EOM rim that wouldn't hold air, cracked or had the chrome peel off always ended up having the same thing happen again.

Unfortunately cracked rims in general have a high percentage chance it will happen again. Fixed a crack three times on one of the rims off my BMW, had to replace all 4 last year because it kept cracking and the chrome started to peel.

I had a rim that was slow leaker a few years ago and I took my truck to a Kal Tire and after explaining my problem to them, they repaired it for me very cheaply. This is an option for you that is cheaper than buying a new rim. Been a few years now and I'm still driving the same truck with no leaking rims.

Well I thought I hit the jackpot after I posted this. Found a Kijiji ad for the same rim I need (The guy was selling 1) for $100, brand new still in its original box, never used. I spoke with him on the phone, drove up to his place cash in hand to take it off of him. The photo he posted on Kijiji was of the rim I wanted, the rim he had was different..... It was the Ram Longhorn upgrade rim.....

Have you even confirmed it's the rim leaking? From your first post it doesn't sound like you have. Could be the valve stem leaking as well. Bring it to a tire shop.

They replaced the valve stem and the pressure sensor when the tires were changed on that rim at my request.

I'd spray some water/soap mix on it. Find exactly where its leaking. But that's just me.

I get all my spare parts from the wrecking yard. Best price. The one I have been to re stocks on Thursday. Call and ask if they have any. All parts and vehicles are tracked.
