222 input
I have a 1976 222 rem 700bdl heavy barrel varmint that shoot 50gr bullets just under .5 with nothing done to the rifle. What would you do??? I am thinking bedding and free float and a better trigger... possibly 2 stage?

What’s to change?
I wouldn’t dick with anything other then maybe trigger clean up. Save your money for new scope or ammo components. Maybe a nice bipod or set of bags.

guess it all depends where you hope to go with it.
1/2" with a duce is fairly normal, but the 'tenths' smaller after that come at a cost.
bedding is never a bad thing. the factory trigger is fairly easily adjusted to mid single digits.
i've seen benefits from a crown job.
a quality rest and rear bags are good for repeatable groups.
optics are probably gonna show you more results than some of the tinkering.
sierra 52gr bullets seem to get along very well with the duce, as does n133, and trued lapua brass.
wind flags and practice are the final additions to obtain many small repeatable groups................
or just send where old .222's go to die; my house; and get a 223 like the rest of the world

I’d second this. If you feel you need to change something just change the trigger. But with .5 groups I wouldn’t touch a thing.

Thank You All ... I am down that rat hole chasing the smallest group ... then I usually sell and find a new challenge, but I think not with this one... it out shoots an Annie I tricked out and matches a 788 I once dressed out. Anyways, these groups were with a 3 x 9 leupy, I have a 4.5 x 14 and a 6.5 x 20LR both in fine duplex ... the trigger is crisp with no creep but goes off like it is industrial ... I always liked double set triggers... any recommendations for after market?

Don't know about sourcing a double set trigger, but Timney and Jard make a single set for the 700.Trigger Tech was supposed to release one last year, they displayed it at SHOT Show, maybe this year production.

I am shooting a older Savage 340 in 222 rem and my goal is to get down to .5" five shot groupings. If I had your rifle I think I would do the trigger work first and see what happens. Unfortunately for me the Savage 340 has a very heavy trigger and according to what I read online there is not much to be done about that. Good luck with your project.

Actually what I would do is load up on ammo and keep shooting it, " if it ain't broke don't try to fix it "

Most times the biggest change that can be done to decrease the grouping is to change the guy pulling the trigger!!!!!
Just a thought!

File the words Remington off the receiver and engrave Anshultz...that should give you the added accuracy you desire.... ...why mess with it Unless your willing to spend big coin for small..gains.

For me, I'd be inclined to try some different loads before making changes to the rifle. My 222's one a steyr loves reloader 7 with 40gr bullet. My Kimber loved 50 gr with 322, and my LSA55 loves 55gr with Win 748 powder. None with lapua brass.....FS

What you have there is a terrible rifle. I suggest you sell it...to me.

I bought one for my dad in Ontario to hunt deer with[it is legal there] as he is recoil shy.24gr of win 748/55gr win bulk or old Hornady with cannelure in win brass.A dozen big bodied WT's and 3 black bears one shot per customer. Most shots are from the muzzle to 150 yards there apple orchards and small fields. Most were bangflops or the 30 yard dash and drop.None lost.He not longer hunts and is dealing with cancer.

222 rem.
well i just went back and bought another 222 rem. in a Tikka 55 from tradex, it's a one holer with proper loads that I had recorded for my Sako A1. shot it for 25 yrs, on paper, gophers, coyotes, magpies, u name it. !! A great classic round that Mike Walker loved. !! Depending on your shooting needs, its a GREAT old CLASSIC. Like many of our super duper new cartridges, don't prove to be overly more effective than what was developed in the 50's and 60's. JMO old school technology. I had thought of rechambering to 223 rem. but it's your dime, and Trigger time and careful reloading do pay off. !! KC. (IF it an't broke don't fix it) Like Duceman said, send it to his bone yard. !!???

I have one as well, the scope mount leaves a little to be desired but it is a very good shooter for such a poorly secured action
