Default Opinions on the Savage Model 25?

What're the general thoughts?

AO member Southernman had one in 17 hornet, and he was not at all happy with it. Perhaps he will respond and provide a list of the defects that his rifle had.

Look at post#5 to get an idea

I've got one in the Tupperware stock in .22 Hornet.
Decent enough accuracy(still working loads up)
It functions ok.
The angled magazine profile(reminds me of an SKS) is pretty fugly.

I'd say it's about a 5/10, and it gets a 5 because it come in .22 Hornet.......otherwise I'd rate it a 3.5/10.

Had one and wasn't a fan, jammed every once in awhile and felt cheap but shot pretty good.

I was looking at the 25 with the thumb hole stock, it ain't pretty but shouldered really well. Glad to hear about these comments, I'm not too keen on it now.

Thanks folks!

I took a Savage 25 Walking Varminter in .17 Hornet. I didn't manage 5 rounds of ammo before deciding to get rid of it.

Spend the extra and buy the CZ in 17 Hornet. You will be REALLY happy you did. The only gun worse than the Savage (at least the Savage groups good even if it is ugly as hell) in 17H is the Ruger. It costs almost as much as the CZ and doesn't shoot worth a darn. None of the ones built on the 77/22 (17 HMR, 22 RF ,22 Hornet and 17 HH) action shoot well generally.

Happened to be reading the newest Access paper. They have a Ruger 77/22 in 17 HH for $1459. That is about $500 more than a CZ for a vastly inferior gun. Amazing what the slide in our dollar is doing to gun prices. I know I am seriously looking at advertising guns in the US. Even with the export costs the 35% markup from the dollar is getting to be really attractive.

I owned both a Ruger in 17hornet, as well as a CZ527 in 17 hornet, and the CZ had a far superior trigger, and it was significantly more accurate. Neither was as accurate as my Cooper in 17 hornet, but for the price, the CZ is an excellent rifle.

The model 25 I have is a .233 that is about 6 - 7 years old. I have never had a problem with it. It feeds smoothly and shoots better than I can. I have shoot gophers with it out to 300 yards. And I have shot coyotes out 450. I am very happy with mine. It is in the wooden thumhole stock and shoulder very nicely for me. The one complaint I have about it is the plastic magazine. Wish it was metal like the wife's model 12. From my experience I would look at another one. But I have had good luck with my Savages. Maybe I have just been lucky, I don't know.

I had one in .17 hornet, I can't recommend one at all, mine was a piece of garbage, fit only for a chop saw and a burnt barrel, neither the dealer or savage were interested.
If you want a rifle that loads, ejects, brass isn't so over size, you can't get it in a Redding die, that barrel mounts for optics arnt off centre, so bad you have to buy windage adjustable rings, that goes bag, when you squeeze the trigger, then get a CZ,
If taking five minutes to load from mag, fire and eject spent brass, appeals to you, then by all means get a savage model 25.
**** poor rifle, and even worse product support.

If your interested in a .17 hornet paire gun, in SK, has a CZ varmint for $900 odd, I like mine, very accurate, and functions perfectly.

Sounds like you got the opinions you're after, and they're consistent with what I've heard about these guns. Looking at them beside the Savage 93 rimfire actions...it looks like basically the same gun, different ejection port and mag...maybe even uglier lines. I've wanted to like one because of the caliber offerings, but between the bad reviews and basically...a 93 action for 2x the price, I've 100% abandoned the idea forever.

I think CZ is the way to go.

My next varmint gun will either be a 527 or a Tikka T3. (won't be a .17) CZ527 is a much prettier gun in my opinion.

Never heard a bad word about the 93 though. Hard to find many people that are happy with the 25 however.
