Default Cartridge feeding.

Often overlooked or really unknown. A non negotiable with me.
My 11 year old videoed me feeding cartridges in my 338.

So many rifles don't feed properly. They feed after a fashion or feed most of the time, but don't feed like they should.

This rifle started life as a 30-06 so I knew it would need work. Perfect. Why not start with something that can be worked with. The magazine box was changed out. I supplied a follower and spring from the new BACO winchesters, and a Williams extractor then Jan did the rest. He modified the rails, and feed ramp then worked over the extractor and of course opened up the bolt face. He also installed a Lh factory take off 338 Win Mag barrel. The result is a rifle that can be used with confidence any time and anywhere.

Default feeding

I had a couple in my lifetime that were sub-standard in that department...not for very long though..

I have seen more than a few rifles that would fed well with loaded ammo but to get a rifle to feed like that with empties is not something you see every day!

Feeding empties isn't necessary of course, but it sure is nice.

This in spite of the dreaded belt, coned breech and extractor cut.

I just tried a few like that; pre 64 in 30-06 did that as did a new featherweight 270. A win extreme weather in 270 failed as did a nineties era 280. A couple more fed the right side but not the left. Feeding reliably is where more than one gunsmith could improve.

The next test is to see if they are true CRF. I'll bet the pre 64 30-06 is.

The crf happened with 3/4 inch brass visible. It might be a little different with a loaded cartridge. The newer featherweight being a bit smoother

It should happen as soon as the brass clears the rails. The idea being that that cartridge is always under the rifles control.

Nice smooth feed. Feeding empties really is a test that separates the great feeding guns from the average, though I suspect getting a staggered feed to do it would be a lot trickier. That said, as long as a gun feeds smooth and reliable every time with loaded ammo, that is my test. If it doesn't and can't be made to it goes down the road.

I really like the looks of the perfectly smooth rings. What type of rings and bases are those?
